Re: Percentage self-taught sailors?

That's more or less my story. I was getting older too, so I bought an 11 foot Bolger CarTopper figuring, 'this thing has 4 times the volume of my sea kayak... if I can cruise for a week in my kayak,...

Re: Moving up - How do you know it's the right time?

Well, you are boat shopping, as you tend to do - and you happen across a boat that you cannot NOT buy. Things change. You jump off the cliff. Enjoying the ride...

Re: Towing a Kayak

We strap our kayaks from the stanchions outside the lifelines. This works well as they are very light weight kayaks (about 25 lbs), so very easy to load and deploy on the water. They also serve as...

Re: Va/nc/sc

We keep our boat (Hunter 23.5) on North Creek on the Pamlico River (10 mi east of Bath NC) and sail most weekends year round. Unless we can find last minute cheap flights to Mexico, we'll be out...

Re: Just bought our first sailboat

Just be cautious, but stretch a little every time you go out - or at least some of the times. Sail often. Experiment. You'll have it figured out before long.

Re: Is sailing intuitive?

Took me a year or so, sailing 100 days per year, to relax and start to really commune with the boat/water/wind. One of the best and finest experiences of my life.

Re: How not to go "camping" while cruising frugally

We call cruising on our Hunter 23.5 'pampered' camping. The longest trip so far has been 13 days. We were as ready to go on day 13 as day 1. I spent a coupla decades making several trips a year...

Re: Would you rather own a sailboat or a RV?

For me the question is more about motor versus no motor. Sail. No question.

Re: First time singlehanding, bad things happen, the sound of breaking fiberglass, et

I've wondered about tethers. I used to do a lot of mountaineering and one of the biggest hazards was getting tangled up in your rope. If you read 'Accidents in North American Mountaineering' (yeah,...
