Re: Breasting my fin keel? Help please.

People dry out their boats all the time in parts of Europe. Search the web for that term and you should get some info. I have seen pictures of boats leaning against a wall or with lines out to...

Re: Stuffing box & grease fittings

That is too hot. Figure in the neighbor hood of 60 Deg C. Cool enough to touch but not continue touching. Should be no warmer than lukewarm. I used to grease Teflon packing with Teflon grease. I...

Re: Stuffing box & grease fittings

Sorry for being glib Kenn. I was thinking the PO had one to many one day and had an idea. I wouldn't worry about your stuffing box if you know the packing is OK. The grease is not a substitute for...

Re: Clean or replace holding tank?

Get rid of that used 5/8 hose. It can stink more than you know. The biggest problem with it is it probably is not sanitation hose. That turned out to be the problem with a N30 I owned years ago. The...

Re: Clean or replace holding tank?

While you said you changed all the hoses did you replace the old 5/8 vent hose also? Just checking as that is very important.

Re: Prop for my 9.9 Merc used for a sailboat

You would generally want to go down in pitch to give you more power and up in diameter to give you more efficient bite. More blades will help too. The prop that comes standard is meant for a boat...

Re: Oh lordy... bent keel?!?

The picture is tilted a bit which makes it look worse than it is. I would also be interested to see it in the slings. Put a straight edge on it to see if it is bent over it's vertical rise, looks...

Re: Diesel Full Cutoff (Shutoff)

Faster is correct. Just pull it out till it stops, then push it back in. Modern engines have a solenoid that interrupts the flow when a button is pushed. But it does the same thing as a pull knob.

Re: Volvo Problems

Search, this is my post from several years ago.

MD7a - know it well. You can use a non contact thermometer for troubleshooting. It works great for showing the hot spots. I had cooling problems...

Re: VHF Receive but not Transmit?

I recently had a mic go bad. The radio is at the nav station with a mic in the cockpit. It simply quit, but would receive just fine. Not an uncommon problem as I found out. Found a used mic on ebay...

Re: Marine A/C and refrigeration

I fought a problem with my Frigoboat air cooled fridge for over a year. It started out as stopping working. By turning it off for a few hours it would then run for months. It eventually got worse. I...

Re: Patching Around Strut

Agree with Faster. Remove all damaged material. I would go at it with a putty knife, then grinder. Check out that rusty spot. I would layer some glass on there to strengthen it. Needs a zinc too.

Re: Noise Reduction

It has been about 20 years since I put in any noises reduction materials so things have probably changed a bit. I insulated a gas engine compartment which required a different density of foam for the...

Re: Replacing lead Keel bolts

I think the solution here is not to spend $3,000+ to repair a 33 year old 25 foot boat. That is why doing it yourself is appealing. What really is a viable alternative?

Re: Replacing lead Keel bolts

I believe I would drill a new hole for the new stud. Then drill a large hole in the side of the keel to meet the end of the first hole to put a nut/washer on. Drop in some threaded rod, put a nut on...

I have noticed how I use my fowl weather gear. I have a West Marine Explorer set that I like a lot. I also have a lighter duty (cheaper) jacket with hood.

Re: 2 blade or 3 blade propeller

Generally better to start a new thread than use one 8 years old. 3 will have more drag with lower vibration probably only felt on the tiller. Drag with a 3 blade is so significant most sailors will...

Re: Islands 17 Spongy Deck

Core is rotten. Decks are generally made with a sandwich of fiberglass on each side with plywood or end laid balsa wood in between. When water gets in the wood rots. Proper repair involves cutting...

Re: Advice wanted: Tides Marine Track and Slide system

You can get away with heavy material on a full batten main because the battens hold the shape in light winds. And it won't lose shape in a blow. The large roach gives extra sail where you need it in...

Re: Advice wanted: Tides Marine Track and Slide system

I have full batten main and the Tides track. I like it. The track does make it easier to raise and lower the main. I still need to go forward and pull some of it down however but that is mainly due...
