Re: Where do I start?!!

Since it is an older boat a god fiberglass restorer will help clean both the hull and deck. If the gelcoat is dull and dirty, an afternoon with a mild rubbing compound like 3-M and a polishing wheel...

Re: Newbie Questions: How do you lock the boat?

You're way ahead of the curve if you start off thinking you "want to be a good candidate and not get kicked out of the marina."

Welcome to my dock any time!

The rules (written and unwritten)...

Re: Pulling up the anchor single handed. Tips?

Like you, when I single hand, it means making a few trips back and forth between the wheel and the anchor line - in general, the more wind, the more trips.

I have read some interesting articles...

Re: Would you give up sailing?

For a few, sailing is a mode of transportation, and those might make the change to electric solar boat....

For others, sailing is a recreational and competitive sport....

For others, sailing is...

Re: Chart Plotter Location?

Many of those photos are beautiful! Wish I had that much room in my cockpit.

I initially installed a Standard Horizon unit at the Helm, The primary reason was to use it for navigation at night...

Re: Getting back into it

One approach you could consider....

Since you are just getting back into it, and haven't sailed in awhile is to look around the local boat yards and sailing ads and find something well-built but...

Re: Which Smartphone for Sailing

I agree. I primarily use my iPhone (currently) and iPad as a back up to my chart plotter, but I have learned the hard way to use up to date paper charts when going into a harbor or area I'm not...

Re: Which Smartphone for Sailing

Thanks. Read that article and the ideas are helpful, but phones have come a long way since the Palm OS and Blackberry talked about in that article.

Also considered the Samsung Note. I'll have...

Re: Which Smartphone for Sailing

Which navigation app do you use on the Nexus? I assume the app could be used for any android phone as well.

I tend to agree with Chef. When it first came out, the iPhone was a great...

Which Smartphone for Sailing

I have tried to search for updated information on sailing apps and adaptability, but much of the information on non-iPhone apps and phones on these forums is old, and the market has jumped ahead in...

Re: A little rigging advice please

I agree. While it is true that the 5/16 wire will feel more sturdy in your hands and will be more stout, I doubt that you need the extra strength for this 1974 boat. You didn't mention whether the...

Re: Lubricating Sail Slugs?

I just spray a bit of SailKote on the first 2 or 3 slugs and raise the mainsail. it doesn't take much to lube the track on my 40' track. If a little lube doesn't help much, you may have some dirt...

I have followed this thread for awhile, and can appreciate and even commiserate with many of the posters. Probably don't need to add my opinion, but I have observed the following from the several...

Re: hole plug

I concur. The "plug" that comes with most of these depth/speed instruments is meant to be temporary, and usually made of plastic and hollow, typically much less substantial than the speedo/depth...

Re: Thanks MaineSail!

Or equally beneficial, consider purchasing some of those do-it-yourself items from his site. The butyl tape has come in very useful over the years.

Thanks Maine Sail for all the "How-To" advice.

Re: Traveler???

Some boats are designed for a mid-boom traveler, others for an end boom traveler/sheet, and most somewhere in between. The forces on the deck or cabin top transmitted from the mainsheet are...

Re: Cape Dory 30 - How slow is "slow?"

How slow is slow to you? If you are not racing, it makes perfect sense to buy a heavy boat that will smooth out the chop on the bay on those rough days, and be a boat you are happy sitting in on the...

Re: which side slip?

As to the concerns you mentioned, I think it is a wash. You will have a neighbor that can hit you either way, and whether it is easier to "cut" sharply into a closer slip or slide to the farther...

Re: Main Halyards - Back to cockpit or keep at mast?

I agree with Dave. My lines are all run back to the cockpit for a number of reasons:
1. It is much easier in a pinch with sailing solo or short handed to raise and lower the main from the cockpit....

Re: New(er) vs. Old(er)

This question seems to come up frequently. The thoughtful responses are as varied as the available boats are, and are almost always correct (both sides).

I look at this in the same way you would...

Re: Champagne taste on a beer budget

I agree with getting out on the water. In my experience (and observation) it is rare for someone to wait for years for that "perfect" first boat and find that indeed it really is the perfect boat...

Re: Anchor light

I agree. Don't fool around and get a good nights sleep. The cost of a good LED mast-head anchor light has come down considerably, and is worth the investment.
