Re: Screwpile 2014

Dave Baxter in Norfolk is an excellent sail maker (been there for 44 years) and stands behind his product. He made the mains'l and 135% Genoa on my friend's Tartan 34 Classic that I race on from...

Re: Screwpile 2014

I'm on Midnight Breeze, it's my friend, Rick's, Beneteau 361. You and I probably met at the St Michaels race this past May during the raft up. We were the last boat to arrive before the AYS guys...

I'm not racing Screwpile but I am crewing in the EYC's Annapolis to Solomons Island race this weekend. After the after party breaks up we're headed up to HHN to spend the night and then back to...

Or the corollary..."Money can't buy love but it can buy exotic cars and luxury yachts after which you'll be fighting love off with a stick."

Never enter the slip faster than what you're willing to hit the dock at.

Re: Does a first sail ever go as planned?

As a military guy, we always said "no plan survives first contact with the enemy" and "the enemy always gets a vote on your plan." :-)

Re: Which Smartphone for Sailing

I used an HTC Evo 4g for over a year with good results until it died. Replaced it with the Galaxy S3 last November. I like the processor's speed but prefer the HTC user interface. I use...

Re: Effect of shifting weight

I have been in races where the wind died and we had to drop anchor because the current was taking us away from our next mark. If you do remove it from the pulpit, make sure you have it somewhere...

Re: Are Jabsco marine head joker valves interchangeable?

From what I've experienced and researched, Jabsco joker valves also tend to wear out faster. We replaced the Jabsco joker valve in our Jabsco manual head last year with a Raritan one and it has been...

Re: What? Sharks in the Potomac....

Re: 70' Hylas grounded, dismasted in Penobscot Bay...

I think you're on to something with the compression theory. I used to design and build composite airplanes. Carbon fibre parts are designed for specific load paths and while they do a superb job...

Re: SMCM Governor's Cup

They updated the standings. Bugbear came in 5 hours behind Wind Orchard to secure the DFL position, so much better than the DNFs they got the past 3 races. :D

Re: Boat is sluggish

We're having a bad barnacle season on the Chesapeake. Even boats that get a good amount of use are getting growth on the screw.

Re: Need to post this on the 'Ocean Navigator' subforum if possible

It is widely believed that a semi-submerged shipping container ripped open the Sanya Lan's carbon fiber hull during the first leg of the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race.

Re: SMCM Governor's Cup

Yeah, we were quite ready to get off that boat! Our skipper hand-wrote our finish time on the results board (as per the SI) when we finally arrived, I'll tell him to follow-up with the race...
