1) My boat behind was overtaking and thus obviously the give-way vessel. RRS-12
2) The obstruction to the left (to windward) was not a factor since there was...

Re: Rule 16 situation: Room to Keep Clear

Well, this was a pursuit race with slower PHRF boats starting first, timed so that the fastest boats would theoretically catch the slow boats at the finish line.

We were obviously the give-way...

Re: French Polynesia

I canceled my trip to Tahiti from Hawaii, but I've gathered quite a bit of information during the preparations! (If you're curious, the cancellation was due to engine problems and solar issues...

Re: It's getting hot in here.....fridge problems

This may be a bit off the subject of cooling effectiveness, but my fridge compressor was going spastic last month. It cooled well, but was very sporadic in it's seemingly random cooling cycles.

I...

Old Pur 40E testing

I bought a Cal 39 with a Pur 40E watermaker and did some testing with it. It had been pickled, but no idea for how long.

Anyway, I take the boat out to some clean ocean water and started her up....

My four stroke dingy motor has an issue:

I start her up, no prob. 2 minutes of warm up at idle, no prob. I start off on my dingy run, no prob. Halfway across, she quits!

I put on the starter...

Rule 16 situation: Room to Keep Clear

I have a race question from an experience a couple weeks ago. Maybe someone can help out:

Mason 43 for under $40,000!

I've been shopping around for a good blue-water sailboat for about a year now and this Mason 43 just popped onto my radar for around $30-40k. My buddy was talking with his neighbor at the docks who...

30' Ericson, but head was removed!

I found a great deal on an Ericson 30 for $8000 in good shape. Owner needs to sell. It's a few feet smaller than what I was looking for (I will be island hopping in Hawaii), but it's such a great...

GeorgeB: By "fastest around a circuit", I mean it can go around a racing track quick. As opposed to reaching high speeds on the beam-reach, but can't tack worth a crap. As for steep tack, perhaps...

That Olson 25 looks like exactly the type of boat I'm looking for, but it seems maintenance costs would be higher. Also, they seem harder to find. If I'm wrong in these assumptions, please speak up....

I've sailed a few times per year on the ol' Sunfish and Clark C-Lark for 15 years or so now. Nothing over 14 feet. Time to upgrade.

I'm looking for a 20 to 25 foot sailboat, fast, but good for an...
