Re: Production buckets and the limits

I've always loved wood buckets...they're just so much work. Would you rather be using your bucket or working on your bucket and dreaming about using it?

Re: Bottom paint for summer only fresh water boat?

Will it go over existing paint or do I need to go down to gel coat?

Say...you've owned an Irwin 28...I may need to pick your brain at some point. Your review was very helpful and actually helped...

Bottom paint for summer only fresh water boat?

Hi all-

Any suggestions for bottom paint for a boat that is going to live in cold, clean, Montana lake water for about 4 months out of the year? Don't know that it's going to become "fouled"...we...

A small success

To quote Tom Hanks in Cast Away (kind of):

I...HAVE...MADE...FIBERGLASS!!

First time doing fiberglass and it wasn't that bad. Had a small section of rot in my forward bilge so I cut it out,...

Re: Glassed-in keel/CB restoration?

That's a legitimate concern but my PO couldn't find his butt with both hands...even if it was glassed I'd get eyes on and make a call based on what I found.

Mine isn't glassed, just a leak by...

Re: Outboard oil mix specs

What flash points, viscosities and settle don't get you pumped?!

Re: Glassed-in keel/CB restoration?

If my CB trunk was glassed over, it would just be a matter of cutting out the slot. Chances are the "repair" would not be gel coated, so sanding off the bottom paint would probably show you the area...

Re: Thetford 550P MSD install - in progress

Interesting read. I'm thinking about doing the same thing. We're lake cruisers and will NEVER be on our boat for more than 3 days, and we'll always be within a few hours of a pumpout. Our favorite...

Re: Sealing centerboard pin?

Guess I should have been more clear...the pin goes from the outside of the hull, through the ballast, through the CB, and exits through the ballast and hull on the other side. If I look through it I...

Sealing centerboard pin?

Gut check on a plan please...

I've got a small leak from around my centerboard pin and I'd like to re-bed the pin. I've got some other fiberglass work to do in the vicinity and I'm taking the CB...

Re: Hey fiberglass pros...which filler?

West says 404. Probably money ahead with the price of Marine Tex...sheesh...must be impregnated with gold.

Hey fiberglass pros...which filler?

Decades on a roller trailer has played Old Harry on the bottom of my shoal draft keel. I need to rebuild the area and I'm wondering if I should use West 404 High Density filler, Marine Tex, or...

Re: Home made exhaust riser - mixing elbow

I'm doing the same project using the same web site for reference. Going to get started as soon as my new exhaust flange arrives. Planning a basically identical setup, maybe just a little more rise.

Re: What's the most absurd seller statement you've heard

"Just needs a carb rebuild".

Yeah...what...for it to have a rebuilt carb?

Re: Fuel in oil - where to start?

Hard to say. Looks production, but the boat is 40 years old, so who knows what's been done to it. It's not a good setup regardless...it just defies too much of the proper exhaust theory I've read...

Re: Fuel in oil - where to start?

In case anyone's following this...here's the latest.

Took the head and exhaust manifold off, both look sound. I'm 99% sure I'm the victim of a poorly designed exhaust system. With the exception...

Re: Fuel in oil - where to start?

Yeah, the paste just doesn't have the sensitivity to pick up small amounts of water in emulsion. Lab results came back as 5% water. That's after 10 min of running.

Re: Fuel in oil - where to start?

PO winterized with antifreeze...only so many places it can come from and all are expensive. Going to pull the engine in the next few weeks and see what we got.

Re: Fuel in oil - where to start?

{end_routine:"premature_celebration"}

Crap...sent the oil in to a lab for analysis. Positive for water and antifreeze. Ah well, at least I understand possible sources of fuel contamination...

Re: Fuel in oil - where to start?

{run_routine:"premature_celebration"}

WOOHOO! Water detection paste shows NO WATER! It must just be a large amount of fuel. On with the carb rebuild, and see where we go from there. WE MAY BE...

Re: Fuel in oil - where to start?

I have some of the mystery goo in a jar to see what happens. So far it hasn't separated. I've got some water detection paste coming that should answer the question for good.

You may be on...

Re: Fuel in oil - where to start?

Hey Paul-

No, old pump has been removed and the hole was covered with a bracket for the new one.

Re: Fuel in oil - where to start?

OK...carb is off and rebuild kit is ordered from Sweden (sheesh). There was quite a bit of varnish and the main gasket was ripped.

Now that I'm into it more, I don't have a good feeling about...
