Re: Exceeding Hull Speed in Flat Water: Fantastic Sailing in Ideal Conditions

I have to agree with James. This weekend was just plain perfect for sailing in the Rivah. Went out Sunday in Rappahannock and it was one of those beautiful days: nice steady wind, relatively flat...

Re: Defend Defender!

I do my research. I decide on the product I need. Defender usually has the lowest price (though not always) in which case I place the order. Simple transaction. If I need to return something., never...

Re: Bird nests in the boom

A piece of sponge works well for me. Easy to stuff it in, easy to get it out. Plus, it is cheap and easy to replace.

Re: Hypervent or Equivalent? - seeking condensation solution for under berths

Well, it is fairly easy - I just roll it up to access the storage below as the springs are connected to form a sheet of sorts. On the other hand, if I had to do it on a daily basis, I probably would...

Re: Hypervent or Equivalent? - seeking condensation solution for under berths

I have been using this Froli Sleep Systems by Nickle Atlantic, LLC ( and condensation has never been an issue. More comfortable rest comes as an extra bonus.

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

If one was to follow this analogy, then no one living in remote areas (say half of Alaska) should even have kids. If this happened on land, it would not even make the front page news. Facts and...

Re: How do you feel about catamarans?

I used to be skeptical of catamaran's sailing characteristics until I saw this beauty: G-Force 1400 (

It looks like this one could keep up with monos and...

Re: Camera recommendations

+1 for Panasonic TS3 (or newer models). Waterproof, shockproof, fairly slim and takes decent pictures. has a fairly detailed write-up. Had mine for 3+ years. No problems whatsoever.

Re: Bobby's in Road Town, BVI

I was there this past December and seem to remember Bobby's being open. However, there is Riteway in Road Town and you should definitely check it out before committing to Bobby's.

Re: 10K$ boat --- Are Insurance and Survey REALLY mandatory?

You still don't get it, do you ? It is mentality like this that will lead to the mandatory boat insurance. I am not saying that you have caused any damage or that you are likely to do so in the...

Re: 10K$ boat --- Are Insurance and Survey REALLY mandatory?

Well, let me see. You post a lengthy, rambling note which basically says that you are free to cause any damage to anyone you wish and, even if it is your fault, you do not give a damn. What do you...

Re: 10K$ boat --- Are Insurance and Survey REALLY mandatory?

You better be careful out there. A lot of us are still more than capable to go "old school" towards those who exhibit this type of reckless mentality. If you wreck my boat AND you think it is my...

Re: Cement Ballast - Pros/Cons

I have been sailing a 1995 Com-Pac 35 with cement balast for the last six years. No problems so far. Had a few soft groundings, again no problem. I am aware of the fact that cement is not the best...

Re: The Loss of The Alpha 42 "Be Good Too"

Through all of this, too, we were now having to pump out the moist sections of the boat by hand. Water had been coming aboard continually in certain compartments for some time and now with no...

Re: sail quote

Not so sure that going local is better. I went with a local loft a few years back when ordering a new main and genoa. Genoa: ordered 150, got 135. The loft did not notice it until I brought it to...

Re: Favorite Boat Shoe???

So far Men's Billfish 3-Eye Boat Shoe is my favorite. Decent grip, dries out quick, feet don't seem to sweat as with others (eg, Slam). Seem to be made fairly well - I had mine for close to 8 years...

Re: Conch Charters, Tortola Or Sailtime Road town?

I would definitely second Sunsail or Moorings out of Road Town. Just came back from our 3rd trip there. 8 days was barely enough. Simply too much ground to cover. Enjoy the trip.

Wink Re: Winter vacation ideas to stem sailing withdrawl?

I know that you said you are not looking to charter a boat. But, there really is no better way to beat winter (sailing) doldrums than to charter (bareboat) in the Caribbean. Start with BVI's. You...

Re: How often do you visit your boat during winter layup?

EVERY weekend unless I'm out of country or really sick. But then again she is only an hour drive away and in the water. She is my boat after all. Still. I do NOT like winters.
