Re: Beta 20 with Sea Prop 60 Saildrive

Yikes!! That sounds far more serious than the ticking noise that we encountered. I now have just over 100 hours on the replacement Sea Prop 60 saildrive unit and am still pleased with it's...

Re: Repowering a Bahama 30

I cannot recall the diameter of the through-hull, but I think it was smaller than 7/8th". Probably 3/4". I put in a saildrive unit, thus the old through-hull was glassed over. The engine now gets raw...

Re: Repowering a Bahama 30

The Beta manual calls for 7/8th" (22mm) fitting/inside diameter of the hose.

Re: Backing Plates for I30 Bahama Stanchions

I suffered the same problem in both my Bahama 30s. I cut the vinyl at the zipper and again at the hull/deck joint, removing the vinyl and gaining access. I found the open cell foam backing completely...

Re: I-30 water tank issue

That's where mine is, just under the sink. Works like a charm. It's a Rainfresh FC 005 "Under Sink" filter, about $30.00. There are different levels of filtering and I use the one for "Chlorine,...

Re: I-30 water tank issue

30 years with the same water tank, same Shurflo pump, without any filter at the tank or before the pump, and all is well. I do have a household charcoal filter between the pump and the faucet, but...

Re: Backing Plates for I30 Bahama Stanchions

Just food for thought....

Unless the plywood core has been damaged by water and rotted, I doubt the current setup will pull though the deck. I suspect the stanchion on the Bahama will break off at...

Re: Beta 20 with Sea Prop 60 Saildrive

I think the transmission noise saga has finally come to a successful conclusion. Beta (and Beta Canada) stepped up to the plate and supplied a replacement Sea Prop 60 with a lower gear ratio and...

Re: Leak detection help-- I30 Bahama

Congratulations on a great boat. I've owned two, both '79s, and have rebuilt both from the ground up. And I agree with the comments posted so far, your best bet will be the hoses draining the cockpit...

Re: Beta 20 with Sea Prop 60 Saildrive

Obviously the engine is going to make the same amount of noise connected to a direct shaft as it will with a saildrive unit. However, noise is caused by vibration and a considerable amount of noise...

Re: Beta 20 with Sea Prop 60 Saildrive

Thanks for the comment Gary. Yes, I've listened to another SeaProp and found the noise to be much less than my installation. Interestingly enough, that particular unit had a different gear ratio....

Re: Repowering a Bahama 30

I've had two Islander Bahama 30s, the first with an Atomic 4, the current with the original Volvo MD7A. The Volvo ran strong but was corroding from the inside (raw water cooling). I have just...

Re: defining "rebuilt"

I tossed the "rebuild" idea around a long time before re-powering. The questions I asked were:

How long do I plan to keep the boat?
How old is the engine?
When was the engine designed and was it...

Re: Beta Marine

As an end to this thread, Beta England has responded to my concerns regarding the ticking noise at low RPM in gear. The replacement (different) drive plate hasn't solved the problem yet. The noise...

Re: Beta Marine

Twin Disc (the manufacturer of the Sea Prop 60) did respond in a timely manner. They sent my concern (and the sound file) to their technical department. The technical department replied with;...

Re: Beta Marine

Yes I have. The sound file (which the Sailnet system won't allow me to attach) has the engine in and out of gear and the clicking noise is quite distinct and noticable. Unfortunately, the...

Re: Beta Marine

The local distributor believes the noise to be "gear lash" out of the sail drive unit. But he doesn't know for certain as this is the first Sea Prop 60 that he has encountered. Although not a...

Beta Marine

A year ago I installed a brand new Beta 20 with a Sea Prop 60 saildrive leg into my Islander Bahama 30, replacing an aging Volvo MD7A. I performed the installation myself with assistance and...

Islander Bahama 30 called "Dreamer"

Here's a challenge for this site. I'm looking for my pervious Islander Bahama 30called "Dreamer". Built in September of 1978 I purchased her in 1989 and was forced to sell in 1996 due to illness. The...

Re: Moisture around chainplates

The chain plates on the Islander Bahama 30 are known to leak on a regular basis. I lift the small deck plates every spring and re-bed them with a Sikaflex sealer. I have also used 3M5200 but it's a...
