I think some concepts are getting combined for the purposes of discussion which are not inextricably linked.

Boltropes/luff tapes are an example. They're a separate issue, or at least separable,...

FWIW, I don't know of anybody inexperienced who taught themselves to sail, singlehanded, on a big boat.

The length limit historically is probably held by Alain Colas, on Club Med, in the Observer Single handed Transatlantic Race of 1976

Hmm - there are two different pairs of questions here (one in the title, one in the OP)

I don't find either sort of sailing frustrating, unless I'm in a boat which simply won't respond in those...
