Re: Marinas in Texas

I'll second smack's vote for Watergate. It was our home port for several years too.

If you want more isolation, but a great marina, check out Harbor Walk Marina. We just spent 8 or 9 months...

Re: Best tablet for sailing

Well, I'll follow as well.

Just curious why you don't just use your laptop? I have a Garmin chartplotter, but also have Maptech Offshore Navigator on the laptop. Plug in the Garmin handheld GPS,...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

I'm not sure if there has been a post here about this, but I'll put it out there.

First, we left with less money than we had planned on. After selling the home and all the stuff, we had a pretty...

Re: Big Freakin' Sails

Pretty good video, smack. I think you guys need to learn some sea shanties for future adventures. I'm currently hanging in San Antonio with my son, playing Assassins Creed Black Flag. It's a hoot....

Re: 1989 Hunter 40 - A million questions.

That's a pretty aggressive itinerary. I hope it works out the way you plan, Steve.

I just read your blog, and noticed (in the video) the filter those guys installed. It looks like a Racor 200...

Re: 1989 Hunter 40 - A million questions.

Bill hit about 30 miles from here, but we were on the weak side. Reported winds were only up to 44 knots. Not bad, and happy Bill didn't have time to develop into a real storm.

In the doof...

Re: 1989 Hunter 40 - A million questions.

Unless you plan to use headsets, work out simple hand signals for forward, neutral, and reverse. It beats yelling over engine noise, and should keep things calm at the helm and foredeck. Good luck....

Re: 1989 Hunter 40 - A million questions.

We've got 100' chain plus another 100' nylon. Also, a 30' snubber. In a blow, I'll have 10:1 scope out. So, first off you need to choose your spot to drop that Mantus, making sure you have swing...

Re: Waterway Guide Beats Active Captain

$17.00 shouldn't kill the cruising kitty. Order here - http://www.waterwayguide.com/shipstore/index.php?cPath=29_31

I've seen Skipper Bob on the shelf at many West Marines too.

If you are...

Re: Waterway Guide Beats Active Captain

Pretty hard to find anchorages easily in the guides. The best by far IMO is Skipper Bob's (sold through WWG). Very quick and easy to find your next anchorage. Also, bridges are listed in order (by...

Re: Help with anchoring for storms.

I'm not sure a Danforth is the best choice. They do hold fine with some bottoms, but they are not known for their ability to reset. The problem with many storms is that the wind direction can...

Re: Waterway Guide Beats Active Captain

That looks a bit longer to me. Maybe you see something I don't? We stop at Morgan City, then on to Houma. That's only a 38 mile run. Houma is a neat stop, BTW. Even if, last time there, a barge...

Re: Waterway Guide Beats Active Captain

Yep, outside from Pensacola to Panama City because of bridge clearance.

We didn't use the Avoca cut-off. I never looked at that option.

If you are doing the ICW from Galveston, and didn't...

Re: Bahamas-Sailing to Cat Island first time

You won't be novice sailors once you make it to Cat.

Go to No Name Harbor (south Miami) to cross. Farther south (Angelfish Creek, or Rodriguez Key) would be even better if you want to take the...

Re: How did you get your spouse to embrace the cruising life?

We left Kemah back in November, 2012. We are back in Texas for a while, after cruising the past two years (5000 miles). The nice thing is that you can do the ditch to Pensacola, Fl., so not too...
