Re: Pencil Zinc location for Yanmar 2GM

Post #3 above is correct for locating the zincs in a raw water cooled 2GM.

As mentioned, they can be a mongrel to remove. The one on the side near the dipstick is a bit tricky because the socket...

Re: Mast (Climbing)- No Halyards

My current boat has a 34 foot mast of fairly heavy section material. It came with mast steps already fitted, obviously done properly by the spar maker. They are the greatest convenience since sliced...

Re: What is your favorite month to go sailing?

Even here in Tasmania at 43 South, any month can be good. In winter we wait for the cold front to pass, then go for it. Usually we enjoy three or four days of nice weather before the next front....

Re: Boat Survey and Sea Trial Question

The BVI is a small place. You need to be really, really sure that the surveyor you hire is not affiliated, related or otherwise connected in any way with the owner or broker.
Having a survey is one...

Re: Yanmar 3GMD zinc replacement - technique question

I think that location is similar to the 2gm.
I got a socket and ground enough metal off the face and sides to allow clearance. It just goes in without having to disturb the fuel lines. You will need...

Re: Yanmar 3YM20 won't rev past 1000 RPM

That depends on what it did before. Has it always been restricted to 2500 rpm?
If so, you could have the wrong prop pitch. Is unburned fuel discharged thru the exhaust at full throttle? That may...

Re: 25 year old boat with no deck leaks ?

If the boat really is as good as the owner claims, 20% above the average for that model may not be unreasonable.
A one owner fresh water boat probably does command a 10% premium and once
you get...

Re: Sequence for offer/buying

I have always tackled it in a way that ensured I was not out of pocket for the survey until I was really confident that this was "the one".

First, inspect yourself.
Second, insist on basic sea...

Re: Removing Zinc Anode Plugs from Engine

I second the above to pull the zinc plugs every six months or so. Even if the zincs themselves don't need replacing it is worth the exercise to recoat the threads with a nickel anti seize.
Do NOT...

Re: Sail Drives?

Overbored perhaps you should take the moniker 'overbearing'.

No need for sarcasm or rudeness because you disagree. Just give a rational counter-argument and we can all play like nice children...

Re: Sail Drives?

$2k to change the bellows? Ouch alright! That is more than my entire annual maintenance cost, including what it costs me to haul out every 18 months.
Another reason I would never have a sail drive...

Re: Looking to buy a boat in Australia

Neither have I, and it is probably true to say of their smaller boats.
But the 42 comes across as OK to go offshore. I assume that they get beefed up for any serious voyaging. Maybe upgrade the...

Re: Raw water cooling - walk away?

There are probably tens of thousands medium sized outboards operating in commercial service that never see a freshwater flush.
The key to raw water cooling in any marine engine is " use it or lose...

Re: Raw water cooling - walk away?

Most outboards are still raw water cooled, or aren't the bigger one these days? Anyway the smaller ones still are and I don't see people too worried about that.
Yes, Yanmar parts pricing is enough...

Re: Looking to buy a boat in Australia

Mixed reports about Catalinas here. Some have had quality issues, apparently, but the same can probably be said for any mass produced boat. The good thing is that, being so numerous, most of the bugs...

Re: Raw water cooling - walk away?

One upside of a marinized auto diesel is cheaper parts. Another could be finding a mechanic who knows the engine.
But, for my money, nothing beats a purpose designed marine diesel from Bukh or...

Re: Raw water cooling - walk away?

The Bukh is a very good engine.
The only problem I had with mine was the exhaust corroded out every few years. Easy enough to replace.
Fit a fresh water flushing system, if you are really worried....

Re: 1983 Yanmar 3GMD REPLACEMENT

If you can afford it, check if the later 3 cylinder 20HP Yanmar (3YM20) will fit on to the same mounts and line up with your shaft.
Expensive, but compared with the old GM series, these are...

I assume that by alcohol you are referring to what we call methylated spirits here in the antipodes?

I have always used metho cookers because they are the safest on board and particularly at sea....

Re: Yanmar parts source... starter?

Unless you are able to hand start your diesel, carrying a spare starter is a small investment in peace of mind. I bought a cheap-ish Chinese non OEM which was half the price of a Yanmar unit (which...

Re: Yanmar GM30 Hard to start

In extremis a short - and I reiterate, a short - squirt of Aerostart or similar proprietary ether based starting spray will NOT break piston rings, blow holes in the block or bend con rods. Think...

Re: Yanmar GM30 Hard to start

Further to the above, carry a spare starter motor! Even an el cheapo non OEM is good insurance. I put one in a locker and had almost forgotten it was there and sure enough, the original burned out...
