Caleb, Upper Nyack may be an option for you, too. We had the boat there when Bill passed (2009). It was on a mooring and everything was fine.

To my knowledge XGate is a software for satellite communication only, it does not speak the language that pactor modem needs: radiomail.

This is a misunderstanding. There is a wifi option for the Pactor modem, but there is no software offering that talks radio mail. Certainly an exciting project, but also a very large one.

Unfortunately the iPad does not talk to the SSB, so that a one cable would not work. There is always a device needed in between. However, you could use your own...

We have basically all our manuals scanned and stored on the kindle or the iPad. As liveaboards we use the iPad a lot for many situations: email, reading news, timer, watching movies, trip planning...
