square wave = short, choppy and steep waves with a short period. They seem to have "sharp" edges that pound a hull unlike the often more rounded swells on the ocean.

In good condition, the Cat/O'day/Hunter would all serve your needs. I recommend making sure whatever you get has a very reliable outboard so that you can choose conservative (read low wind) weather...

You'll likely want your swing keel fully extended beneath the boat for any upwind work. Make sure you've got your sails sheeted in and your main's traveler and boom up to windward as far they'll go...
