Re: My newest project

Wait I thought boat repair was sailing? As I understood the design it's for a tough blue water cruiser. To me that implies being self sufficient in repair work. Anyway. I'm not the buyer. My...

Re: My newest project

Right but really light really strong material in a heavy boat doesn't seem to have much advantage.

Re: My newest project

When I hit stuff though, I was able to jam some glass and some 610 epoxy in the crack for a half assed repair job at anchor and it held tight for another 6 weeks to windward.

Re: My newest project

I actually have hit stuff. Yep. Still learning. Also I've seen other boats hit stuff and come off their moorings and get rammed and all kinds of stuff. I think pondering the future life of a...

Re: My newest project

Bob: worse for me would be more difficult to modify, harder to repair with potentially worse result, much more expensive with little or no performance gain. That said I'm not a designer, customer or...

Re: My newest project

Love the look Bob. I still don't get the carbon thing at all. Seems like it will be much more difficult to repair, with worse results. For zero benefit. I could see if it made the same boat, but...

Re: wind vanes and LOA

I had a navic. I didn't use it much but I felt that it was basically crap. Lots of little plastic parts. You had to stand up on the stern to adjust it (dangerous to my mind). Didn't work well. ...

Re: ball and chain

Look up catenary research. Current money is on it doesn't actually do anything when you actually need it.

Re: First "big" boat--MANY questions

Courageous sailing in Boston is great and not how you describe a club at all. A very nice crowd and good boats. And way less than the price of your mooring.

Re: "Free boat" seaworthiness

Most respectfully (I mean that!) if $350 is going to slow you down, I think you should definitely not buy the boat. It's just the beginning of a long road. I bought a pretty good boat this summer...

re: "Free boat" seaworthiness

Seriously don't take it. There's no reason at this point to take a serious fixer upper at this point unless it offers you something that the cheap but not free boat doesn't. If that thing ever...

Re: Anchor Snubbers Redux

Sorry, why would you need it to go over the roller? Can't you pull the chain in on the windlass and when the hook gets close detach it? There shouldn't be tension on it at that point, yeah?

Re: Putting in new floors and a cabin sole. Also planning a new cabin layout. Advic

There is a plywood sole there, glassed into the bilge. I haven't measured the thickness of it. I don't think it's original. It's pretty spongy. I'm sure if I just went with a 3/4" plywood sole it...

Putting in new floors and a cabin sole. Also planning a new cabin layout. Advice?

As previously mentioned, the sole on my Triton is spongy and damp. Also pretty uncomfortable. There are some cracks progressing along it, so I know that it's getting worked around. My first big...

Can you name mine while you are at it?

For the record. I hate it. Sort of submarines on every row. Not very stable. Got me through tr summer though.

Re: Possible purchase

Having grown up on one of
Mcgregors finest, I firmly believe the best tool to repair one is a chainsaw. Free is way too expensive particularly when so many amazing boats are getting cut up.
