Re: 2016 Sailing Season on the Chesapeake

We have a little toy plastic shovel made by Little Tikes that my son played with 20 years ago (long before we had a sailboat). I never threw it out because I thought it might come in handy someday,...

Re: Marinas with slip price reduction...?

You're looking for a low cost slip in a high cost area. Not gonna be easy.

You might try scouring Craigslist, Spinsheet, other local publications for waterfront property owners who rent out their...

Re: 2016 Sailing Season on the Chesapeake

I had my boat blocked in a different location too. I was tired of being blocked in by powerboats. I used to think that the ones who haul out in December were so gung-ho about fall/winter fishing that...

Are you sure that restriction isn't just for oxygen?

Re: CPAP and energy use

I heard a radio commercial about this today. I don't know anything about it, but here's the website for those who might be interested:

Re: Chart Plotter Location?

One of the advantages of a RAM mount is you don't need to decide on a single location to mount it. You can put extra balls in various places. I have one at the helm, one above my dinette table (my de...

Re: Chart plotter or IPad

Most consumer phone and tablet touchscreen are capacitance, as pointed out already. It's a far superior technology for the average landlubber because of greater sensitivity and speed. But since water...

Re: CPAP and energy use

I already said it on this thread, but my sleep tech told me that all of the modern CPAPs run off of 12v. Most run off power bricks, so when you're on the boat just replace that with a 12v adapter and...

Re: $3000/mo cruising budget

Yeah, and a real cheap shot. The guy spends the time to come up with the detailed list that people are asking for, and gets bashed for it. Good luck getting others to contribute.

Not good style,...

Re: Bedding Deck Hardware With Butyl Tape

Are you sure they didn't use a curing adhesive/sealant, like Sikaflex 295? That's very common for around hatches, etc. It's totally different stuff from the butyl tape.

Carbon black pigment has...

Re: 2015 Sailing Season on the Chesapeake

I really picked the wrong year to haul out early! But I was starting a new job and was concerned that things would be too busy for me to get a chance to sail, so I hauled out a few days before my new...

Re: Bedding Deck Hardware With Butyl Tape

That's true of the cheap stuff from the RV store. But not true of the material that Maine Sail sells. Spend the money to do it right the first time. You won't regret it.

Re: Tablets and Charting

If you like using OpenCPN on a Windows laptop, then you might consider replacing it with a Windows tablet. There are hundreds of them out there at prices that are very competitive with Android....

Re: Electric Propulsion, Anyone Using It?

Not sure why you want to convert between the two on a frequent basis. But if you really want to, and you need to use pencil and paper anyway, then just buy or print some log-log graph paper and plot...

Re: Electric Propulsion, Anyone Using It?

Not sure what's so interesting about this. One is the reciprocal of the other, with a constant numerical factor in front of it. So the plot is just a hyperbola. Nothing noteworthy IMO.

Yeah, but for some of us, that one or two days could get us fired...or divorced. :p

Re: At what point can the seller just end a deal?

Not sure exactly what your point is. This risk exists whether you have a contingent offer on the table or not.

All deals are negotiable, so you could require the buyer forfeit some money if he...

Re: At what point can the seller just end a deal?

Well, "disputing" is not really the right word. But conventional thinking does not always prevail.

As a potential buyer, I personally would not shell out money for a haulout or survey without...

Re: At what point can the seller just end a deal?

Or pay the marina in advance, which many marinas require anyway.

Re: What is installed cost of 12,000 BTU CruiseAir Reverse Cycle?

What component died? How much was the replacement? Did you DIY, or hire it out?

I went to look at the one that does not have AC yesterday. It is a FSBO, and the owner kindly hosted the visit...

Re: What is installed cost of 12,000 BTU CruiseAir Reverse Cycle?

I'll have to look closer, but I'm afraid that on the C320 the floor under the filler is too small to store a hatch unit. It's very tight there.

On a separate subject, there is also a serious...

Re: What is installed cost of 12,000 BTU CruiseAir Reverse Cycle?

Denise,

For years we have said our next boat would be a Catalina 320. We've looked at some others recently and reconfirmed that C320 is the right one for us. Nice roomy accommodations with decent...

Re: Downsizing/Rightsizing

The choice of how to raise one's kids is a very personal one. There is no one right answer, and no use trying to convince someone to one philosophy or another.

As for me, my kids liked playing...
