Re: EPIRB or PLB for coastal cruising
S/V HyLyte has it right. You'll be out of VFH range and you should have a PLB for those on watch and an EPIRB for the vessel. What is your life worth or that of your spouse/GF. I'm former AF Rescue...

Re: Sailing from BVI to Grenada
The rods you have are light for trolling, plus you can't back down on a fish if you're sailing. TQA's suggestions are great for trolling, though I use the wire leaders, gear is expensive. I lived in...

Re: Is a marine survey really worth it for an inexpensive boat?
It a risk an reward answer, if you can justify the risk of not having a survey then save the money and purchase Don Casey's book. My first 27" Keel boat was only 3500.00 it was sound with a strong...

Re: Do I Need an EPIRB?
My Advice comes from being the guy in the air looking for boats and crew in the ocean, USAF HC-130 working with RCC and the Coast Guard. Get the PLB and make sure it worn, it's much easier to find...

Re: Do liner boats get mold in between the liner and the hull?
We just keep the cabin well ventalated and run the dehumidifier when in the water. In South Carolina the houses and tress are covered in moss and molds. Lucky us, so far the boat is clear.

Re: Traveler positions - pros and cons
Went from having it in the front of the cockpit on the Helms 27 to the arch on the Hunter. I find that I use the traveller more now because it's accessable and easilly managed.

Re: How does a boat sink in 15 minutes?
An Outdrive failure can sink the boat in minutes. Think about a 4 inch rip letting in water. I watched one go down in less than 5 minutes.
Sad they lost the boat glad they were prepared, it saved...

We leave when the wife is ready, she stows the gear puts out the cushions. I check the rigging open the seacocks, warm up the engine, remove all dock lines but two. Normally this take 15-20 minutes. ...

Re: Hull Damage
If you're looking at purchasing the boat it's about 2 hours of repair work, but it's minor damage. Key point is never approch the dock faster than you're willing to hit the dock.
