Arrow Re: US Sailing Vs. ASA Sailing classes

This has been an interesting thread. As has already been said, ASA is targeted at cruisers while US Sailing is targeted at racers. Both will have course curriculum overlap because . . . sailing is...

Cool Re: Blue water boat for the Great Lakes?

The Admiral and I have a 35' Beneteau, sail out of Milwaukee and routinely do over 1,000 nm per season on Lake Michigan. We do a couple lake crossings each season. Most were during the day but have...

Thumbs up Re: N00b on deck

If you have the funds to do so, this would be a good time to see if spending time (a week) on a sailboat is something your wife would enjoy. Consider having the two of you going to a live-aboard...

Wink Re: N00b on deck

Welcome to SailNet. Sailing is great fun, especially if you can do it regularly on somebody else's boat.

Learn to sail, research the cost of ownership for several different size boats and know...

Question Bow Thruster by eXturn.

Does anybody out there have an external bow thruster, by eXturn, installed on their boat? I want to hear if it has performed as advertized. I am especially interested in owners that operate in a...

Thumbs up Re: Michigan Summer Itinerary advise?

I like the planned itinerary. My wife and I routinely cross from Milwaukee and crawl up and down the MI side of the lake.

It has been our experience that great sailing winds out of the NW, W & SW...

Arrow Re: Is there a speed limit on the Great lakes

I know what the CFR says but I also know that "everything is local". My backyard is Milwaukee, WI. Like Buffalo, we have an inner harbor, an outer harbor and Milwaukee Bay (the lake).

Question Re: Beneteau Oceanis 45;I need your help to select right spec for 2yr world cruise pl

Not sure where to begin. Iím sure you will get responses that question the wisdom of what you are planning to do. If I read this correctly: You are not very experienced, The boat must be equipped...

Arrow Re: 352

People often find it more convenient to get on/off the boat by walking thru the open transoms. This works well when you have a floating dock, not so good when you have fixed height docks like you...

Arrow Re: 352 port screens

Hi Shari,

The screens don't use any attachment hardware.

The screens are labeled "outside" on one side,
Open the side window (nautical term is 'portlight'),
Go outside on deck,
Gently...

Cool Re: How deep? . . . Ask Mother Nature

When water levels on Lake Michigan are near "normal", a six foot draft is just fine. Last season was pretty bad and some boats had to hauled/towed out of their slips because their keels had settled...

Thumbs up Re: Marine LCD TV

+1 to kellysails.

We have the same setup in our boat. The only difference is we have a 22" Visio. Additionally, we have a feed located high in the anchor locker that we can hook direct to the...

Talking Re: In mast furling and clew

Next time you furl the main, look at the foot as it rolls up in the mast. If the Luff-Foot angle was 90 degrees, all of the "thicker" foot material would roll up on itself and potentially jam itself...

Thumbs up Re: Considering the Mac26

We started with the 26M model as our first "sailboat" having been in power boats for 15 years before that. We loved the boat for all the reasons that you are looking at. It is an "OK" motor boat...

Arrow Re: In mast furling and clew

Can't speak to your specific model but on my B352 the clew is higher than the tack when the sail is fully deployed.

The vang and the main sheet have to be eased slightly so the boom can float when...

While we love to stop at South Haven, we grounded when entering a slip at the Muni Marina (museum side) last year in late June. Lake Michigan water levels were 17.4 inches lower, as of this March,...

Re: Removing painted letters

Oven cleaner works well. Mask the area with a plastic sheet below the letter so the old paint can flow off without running down the rest of the transom.

Don't be surprised to find that the...

Lightbulb Re: Mooring in Western Michigan

I believe you will have to go north to Muskegon Lake to find room for a mooring. I know there is a mooring field in the SW end of the lake near the Muskegon Lake Yacht Club.
