Re: why a storm jib?

Thanks. To take advantage of your 40+ years, what are your "several other items"?

why a storm jib?

With very limited experience I ask this question. If you have a furling jib why do you need a storm jib? Doesn't just partially furling your jib do the same as a storm jib? Or is there some other...

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

No one has mentioned the Texas coast. Anyone have any idea about this area for sailboats? I know there is a lot of fishing and motor boats.

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

The SE United States, particularly Savannah, is looking good, as does the USVI. I'm just not sure about living in a Central or South American country. I'm not opposed, but I just don't know anyone...

Re: It's been a longer, colder, wetter than normal winter...

Aagh! Another 8 inches of snow forecast for Michigan and below freezing temps. I've had it.

Re: New to sailing

This reminds me of the foot-in-mouth statement by former US Ambassador to Italy, Peter Secchia, when he said while serving as ambassador that "the best way to see the Italian navy is with a glass...

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

Change of seasons?!?! What change of seasons? It's still cold winter. It's been cold winter and it's been a nasty winter. I would love to have a change of season but when will that be? Now they're...

Re: Just bought our first sailboat

Take ASA Sailing lessons. It's worth it.

I also noticed you said your "first" boat. What does that tell you?

Re: What did you learn to sail on?

My first sailboat was a Bombardier. It was white and orange. It was like a Laser, with a sail that had a sleeve that fit over a tall mast. I found an old Sports Illustrated book for boys about...

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

The PNF is certainly one of those areas that seem so appealing. I've been in the Seattle area a couple of times in the summer and it is gorgeous. Great seafood. But I hear if it's not summer then...

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

[QUOTE=Bruce_L;1467842]Ever think about the USVI? St.Croix is not your typical tourist trap island and there is great sailing everywhere. Hurricanes are much worse on coastal US shores than in the...

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

No question the Michigan side of Lake Michigan is beautiful. Clean clear fresh water and towering dunes.

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

I have to admit I am surprised with the responses that mention the NE. The dunes of Lake Michigan are beautiful and the water fresh and clean. Summer nights are long and the temperature on the lake...

Where should we retire with our boat?

This winter has done us in. In a couple of years we will be ready to retire and as much as I love Lake Michigan, it is now frozen and that doesn't work for sailing. Where in a warm would anyone...

Re: what is going on in this pic?

The tell-tails aren't moving at all but the boat is well heeled. How does that happen with no wind?

Re: How much wind is too much for you?

I think it also depends upon what kind of water you are on. Wind makes waves. The waves on Lake Michigan are a lot different than the waves on the ocean.

Re: How Far Do You Heel...?

New sailors here as well. This weekend we were on Lake Michigan in a 35 ft. Beneteau. Wind was 20 knots and a small craft advisory. We were between a close haul and a beam reach. There was a lot...

Re: How do you hang your dock lines?

We use something like a dock line holder show from West Marine, but I just got something from the hardware store that you would use in a garage to hang something. A couple of dollars was all.

We...
