Re: Get a Boat. Get a Crew. Sail the World. Simple?

Start by looking for local sail clubs and finding one to join. The rest will follow.

Who knows? You may be back here in six months asking our opinions on that "perfect" boat you've found for...

Re: Get a Boat. Get a Crew. Sail the World. Simple?

Welcome to SailNet, James.

Personally, I would get more sailing experience before buying the boat you plan to sail the world on. That's a huge investment should you find out that you don't like...

Re: How to know for certain whether marinas actually *do* or don't want liveaboards?

My marina doesn't advertise liveaboard rates, yet we have a few who live aboard. It's only a guess but I get the feeling that by not advertising, they have an "out" if the person and/or the boat...

Re: Marinas with slip price reduction...?

You can't beat calling or even driving to the marina on a nice day, looking around, getting a feel for the place, having lunch...

Re: 2015 Sailing Season on the Chesapeake

We're still not in the water. I'm not happy. The marina owner called me this morning and I politely told him how unhappy I am. He promised that tomorrow the new marina manager (who promised me we'd...

Re: Found This Bristol for Sale - Thoughts for New Sailors?

Personally, if those were my only three choices, I'd be all over that Tartan. Look beyond the tired cushions and the need for a bit of wood oil.

Re: Found This Bristol for Sale - Thoughts for New Sailors?

Yes. Marine electricians.

That said, my SO is an industrial electrician but he knows how to install marine grade wiring and how to read the regulations and whatnot.

I trust that he's not going...

Re: Found This Bristol for Sale - Thoughts for New Sailors?

That's good to hear about Liberty Mutual. It sounds like they've changed. When we purchased our current boat my LM agent (they insure our house and cars) told me not to use them as they don't insure...

re: Safety considerations for Great Lakes solo sailor

There is a huge difference between the answers resulting from your thread title and what you asked for in your first post. Some of the responses are generic to offshore cruisers, which won't apply to...

Re: How did you get your spouse to embrace the cruising life?

Perhaps you and your wife could take a sailing course together? That puts you on equal footing and in a learning environment where someone else is the responsible party.

There are also women only...

Re: female crew wanted for Bahamas cruise

As a woman who sails whenever possible, and who knows plenty of others who also love to sail, perhaps your bait is inadequate.

Re: Good Small Boat for Older, Fatter Woman to learn on

That's awesome.

A woman in my marina used to keep a Catalina Capri in a slip. Every weekend I'd watch her husband drop her and one kid off and she'd head off into the bay.

Re: noob question

The navigation rules are mostly the same and racing (even as rail meat) is a way to see in practice within a short time frame what you read about.

I think I understand what you're saying. The boat owner knew how you worked from the first time you were there so what made her think you would change for callbacks 2 and 3.

I don't agree or...

Re: Team Vestas Wind grounded in the VOR

A bunch of SailNetters in the IRC sailing channel talk about the VOR every day. At least four are sailing the virtual race against each other (or however that works).

Re: Best of these Florida cities for sailing

St. Augustine has a VERY active cruising community. A few full-time cruising SailNetters make it their home base. There are regular cruising nets, activities, get togethers. I've visited friends a...
