Re: high wind gybing technique??

Maybe I read through too quickly but you also want to get the boat moving as fast as possible; this drops the apparent wind speed significantly. Also, if you're not racing and don't have to jibe...

Downloading GRIBs at sea

So most of the boats I've raced offshore on have had a way of downloading GRIBs. Usually a very expensive setup too.
I'm looking for the most economical way of setting up my boat to download GRIB's...

Re: Handheld GPS Advice Needed...

What he said! I have the Garmin 76cx (or whatever the letters are) and it's great. I also have a Samsung tablet and loaded it up w/ Nav stuff and Weather apps. Great to have.

Re: Why All the Absurd Circumnavigation Threads?

Any time someone asked me if I'm going to sail around the world when I retire I always say I'm going to sail ABOUT the world. I may only get to New England, Maybe only the Caribbean and maybe only...

Re: Why All the Absurd Circumnavigation Threads?

Yeah, but there is at least one 32' boat out there doing it! BRISTOL 32 at that! (talk about small and tight!) SAND DOLLAR...

Re: Florida is at it again

A real POS! I'm surprised that nobody called the police to complain about the loud music he was playing. I would think that more objectionable then a freaking boat quietly anchored. Wonder how he...

Re: Florida is at it again

More and more I can't come up w/ a reason to even visit FLA.
Would seriously consider becoming a "resident" via St. Brendans but don't even want to give the state any business.

As an aside......

Re: Multi-Day Offshores: The Elephant In The Salon

Multiple passages/races to/from Bermuda. Other trips to/from the islands and one TransAtl. so, while I'm not a circumnavigator, I've seen some snotty stuff.
I find the overnight races on the Bay...

Stuck Impeller

So the last time I changed the water impeller it took some work, but it came off.
Not so this time. Would not budge. And now all the vanes are torn off and I'm left w/ the damn hub stuck on and...

Re: gate valve won't close - 1977 Newport 28

YOU are misunderstanding me. What I said, and what is NOT proper is having a ball valve ONLY screwed onto the thru hull fitting. Which is how many boats, including mine were built in the 80's. ...

Re: gate valve won't close - 1977 Newport 28

RE: Ball valves and thru hulls. It appears from reading some of the previous comments that perhaps there was some misunderstanding.

Yes, Proper seacocks have ball valves. I replace three of...

Re: Surveyor in RI?

Peter Hunt did my survey in 2011. I was pleased. Haven't found anything that yet that he should have found.

Re: Preventer line...

Jon, I've already rigged one of these on the 44'er that I race on. Since we have end boom sheeting we just use one line on the boom and it's bungeed to the side of the boom right about where the...

Re: Preventer line...

Geez guys, did you read my first post? What I was describing is exactly what most of you posted. I AM going to attach to the end of the boom and the AMSTEEL is a just a short section that stays...

Preventer line...

I've finally decided to rig up a preventer for my boat. Whilst I'm pretty adept at sailing deep angles and not backwinding the main (and the accompanying SLAM!) the Admiral isn't, and I really would...

Re: What material is best for boat yards?

I can't add much to what has already been said, but if there is bottom sanding to be done (with the accompanying toxic dust) then a catch cloth should be put down under the boat as well as a vacuum...

Hmmmm, I was planning on going to the boat tomorrow anyway. I'm just down the road a ways. And we had our club dinner at MYC a few weeks ago.

Re: G5 (5 min epoxy) vs regular West System

Just re-read your orig. post. Those must be some hellacious dings/gouges if you feel you need to put a layer of fiberglass on to strengthen the repair.

How about some pics so we can see what...

Re: Help me understand nmea 2000 and electronics.

It's good to have both SOG (via GPS) and Knotmeter (speed through the water) as it will tell you if you're getting set by current and more importantly, when you're NOT.
So let's say you're sailing...

re: Stop, the end, an exit plan for sailing.

Sorta in line w/ this thread is what do we do so we CAN go cruising. I'm almost ready to retire and move somewhere less crowded and less expensive. But I'm not sure I want to chuck everything and go...

Re: Delmarva Circumnavigation

Definitely go counter clockwise. Never done a Delmarva but have done DE Bay more than I care to. IF you time it right you can ride the flood UP the DE Bay, and through the C/D canal and then catch...

Re: Costs of trucking a boat??

While I've never shipped my boat... I used to crew for a guy who shipped his 48' boat.
What drove up the costs was not so much Length, or Width, but HEIGHT. That determines what roads you can...
