Re: Teak Refinish

"Does anyone know if this can be applied on the sanded teak?". Yes, this is the best way to do it.

To get the best finish, ideally you would lightly (and gently) sand between each coat, with, say...

Re: What happens when holding tank is full?

A classic sign of a blocked vent is that you empty the bowl, and later on it has filled back up again. The pressure in the tank is pushing the waste back into the bowl.

Re: Gaf rigged inflatable questions..

Sailed a Gunter-rigged dinghy, quite a bit. No stays of any kind. Despite my best attempts to destroy it, it survived. It had one important mechanism to protect the rig. The mainsheet was handheld....

Universal compression check confusion

In one part of the manual for the Universal 5424, it states a compression ratio of 21:1, which I calculate as translating to 305 PSI on a compression tester.

Elsewhere the specs state compression...

Re: Coolant puzzle

Try to pay attention. Read post 8. You are referring to an atmospheric catch tank, not an expansion tank.

Re: Coolant puzzle

If there isn't an atmospheric catch tank, the header tank is allowing for the expansion of the coolant, so it needs an air space at the top. I'd say about half way up is about right, when the engine...

Re: Coolant puzzle

You're talking about a coolant recovery tank, which catches coolant that passes through the pressure cap if it releases. What I'm talking about is a header / expansion tank, which is in the cooling...

Re: what is this goo in my bilge?

Does the 29.9 have the same deep bilge as the 31.1? Something like 4 feet deep?

I find that mine is always wet, and now and then starts to smell terrible. This is bacterial growth. It can also be...

Re: Marina personnel attached battery wrong

The tachometer gets its signal from the alternator, so fix that and the tach should be fine.

Do you know what electronics would have got switched on?

Re: Good Small Boat for Older, Fatter Woman to learn on

Suggesting triathlons as a way to get fit is a lot like suggesting a mission to Mars as a way to get into electronics.

Re: Yanmar 3GM 30 Cooling Water Mystery

That's not scale, those are bits of old heat exchanger pencil zincs. The zincs frequently corrode through at the base, then break off.

Re: Mainsheet routing through dodger

Have a look at the Garhauer catalog, online. They make deck organisers and stand up blocks which would be plenty strong enough. Just back them up with a good backing plate, inside.

I make my...

Re: Melamine Paint

Seems to be a urethane-reinforced enamel. However, unless the area is subject to high wear, I would have thought that an ordinary enamel would be fine.

Re: Will a Airmar DST800 transducer fit in a Navman thru hull?

No, I'm afraid they aren't standard. Even if, by some miracle, the DST800 has the right thread AND diameter, the length also has to be spot-on to put the transducer flush with the hull.

Re: Boat wire: is SAE tinned "good enough"?

Boat wire is defined by meeting the standards of UL 1426. The construction standards, and the tests the wire is subjected to, are detailed in the standard :

Re: CL 16 questions

PS, as far as inspection goes, the most common issue is distortion of the hull, caused by improper trailering. The weight of the boat should sit on its keel on the rollers, and then be lightly...

Re: What can/should I do while repacking my stuffing box?

I have the Teflon seal packing, and it is almost as good as the dripless. (I don't have clearance for a proper dripless).

I'd suggest replacing the hose as others have said, and use new hose...

Re: Synthetic Motor Oil for my Diesel?

If the filter is vertical, as in hanging down, there are three advantages :

1) If the anti-drain valve is faulty, it still won't empty itself, which has benefits to the engine on start up - oil...

Re: Universal diesel 5416 - oil change

I have the Oberdorfer N202-M15 on my 5424. It replaced a Sherwood. It mounted right on without any adaptations - in fact, it never occurred to me that one might be needed. It has a male coupler that...

Re: Westerbeke 40, ideal consumption efficienty

It's complicated. The boat's resistance through the water is non-linear, so is the specific fuel consumption vs. bhp, and then the prop doesn't behave linearly either!

But if I back my Universal...

Re: Coolant detected in oil (Westerbeke W21)

Here is what I would do if it were my engine :

Check the coolant for exhaust gas. Examine the coolant for oil.

If negative, change the oil, run it for a while, and take another sample.
