Re: Tips and tricks on raising outboard

I have an 8 hp two stroke with that same Garelick bracket, and it's a beast to raise and lower. I stopped trying and now just tilt the engine.

Teak hand rails issues

I removed my teak hand rails today so that I could bring them home to give them a proper finishing, and so they could be rebedded properly. I've been planning on doing this for years; my suspicion...

Re: Groton CT to Branford CT

I was actually responding to an earlier post that I failed to quote, so you were left with the impression that I was addressing your post about New Haven harbor; sorry about that.

The Mermaids...

Re: Groton CT to Branford CT

Yeah, I wouldn't want to try and find my way between the Mermaids at night, especially if I've never been there before. Too many lights on shore to screw you up.

Re: Groton CT to Branford CT

Sparky: I made the exact same trip when I bought my Oday 23 15 years ago! I sailed her from the yacht club next to the UConn campus (can't remember the name of it now) all the way to Goodsell Point...

Thank you.

Re: Rotten Deck

I can't see doing all that cutting and grinding. And I'm certainly not going to pay someone to do it for me. I'm going to drill some holes, remove as much bad core as possible, let it dry, and use...

Re: Defender's Annual Warehouse Sale!

It was an absolute zoo there on Saturday. I thought it might be lighter because of the weather (snow!), but I've never seen it so crowded.

I wound up buying: marine wax, a new cover for my...

Re: Defender's Annual Warehouse Sale!

My experience has been that Defender's prices are usually lower than West Marine's, although not always. In some cases however, Defender's prices have been significantly lower. A few years ago, I...

Re: Defender's Annual Warehouse Sale!

I'm planning on going this weekend. It's a rite of spring around here. Something to chase away the visions of all of the snow that is still on the ground.....

Re: Help me find a 40-ish foot pilothouse

I just saw that Tim Lackey is selling the Fisher 30 pilothouse ketch he's been restoring for himself for the past four years. He has painstakingly documented the condition and renovation of this...

Re: My newest project

Thanks Bob! I was out in the Seattle area a few years ago on vacation with the family, and we had a ball. Shouldn't be too hard to convince the Mrs. that there is more to see and it's worth another...

Re: My newest project

Thanks Bob. I've always been curious about the design process, which is why I am a fan of your Sailing column and why I find your participation here so compelling.

Re: Dumbest passage plan since the BOUNTY sailed straight into Sandy?

I don't see any reasonable or workable way to start charging people for their rescues. There is just no fair way to do it. I do however, think the Coast Guard should be empowered to "close" a port...

Re: When is a dirty bottom hopeless

I imagine that anything that attaches itself to the bottom can be removed; it's just a question of how much time and money you are willing to spend to get it off. The bigger issue in my mind is the...

Re: Are sailing magazine articles boring?

I toyed with the idea of telling them this time that I owned a Perini Navi, but figured it wasn't worth the effort to fib (lie). I really enjoyed the magazine the first go-round; I must have...

Re: Are sailing magazine articles boring?

Webb Chiles is certainly an interesting sailor, but I have to say that I find his writing style unpalatable. Just not for me.

If you're looking for a "Dave Barry"-type of sailing writer, then...

Re: Getting a group together for discount captains license course

I looked into taking a course recently, and decided it was too much of a time commitment right now. My ulimate goal is to retire and do something on the water, but I have a "few" years to go. In...

Re: Getting a group together for discount captains license course

That is exactly what I was told by a guy staffing a Captain's course booth at a boat show. His take was that a great number of the OUPV captains have fudged their experience.

Re: Need info on a boat!

General:

I'm gonna reiterate what I said about the Catalina 25: if you want to trailer and cruise, it's a much better choice than the cape dory typhoon and the Catalina 22. The cape dory is a...

Re: Need info on a boat!

I'm thinking Catalina 25, swing keel version. There are about a billion of them on the market, so the cost is reasonable, they hold their value so you should be able to sell it for close to what you...

Re: Cleating off Furling line?

Normally, I do not cleat off the line aft of the swivel cam. However, if there is weather approaching or if I know I won't be on the boat for awhile, I do cleat off the furling line on one of the...

Re: Quick Advice: Donating a boat ride for charity

Nope. No judicial decisions. Didn't even look. I looked online (CG website) and called the local Sector office. Got the same answer as pdqaltair. That was enough for me. My experience is that...
