Re: A Dragon in the anchorage

Anchors that disappear like transformer robots, bow thrusters that retract, topsides that extend sideways under power, motorized TV's that disappear into the furniture, unsightly sail control lines...

Re: PSS Dripless maintenance

+1 on this idea. It has happened to me as well. Your Lasdrop provides a fine imitation of an old rotary lawn sprinkler in your engine room when the bellows is not adequately compressed. Without...

Re: How to keep it interesting

If the repeat student is doing well, then unofficially make him your teaching assistant. Give him things to do while you talk to the new students (like motor out of the harbor, keep us close...

Re: Serious BBQ

I don't know if this is generally true or not, but ever since we started connecting to the main propane tanks (rather than the disposable ones), we seem to get a more reliable fire that you can light...

Re: Volvo in Newport

When we got back to the Cape on Sunday night, the contrast was unbelievable. I looked at the open water, no crazy sailors, chase boats, screaming fans, choppers in the air, blue lights flashing,...

Re: Volvo in Newport

I heard something about this, but was not there to see it so cannot confirm. I will say this, needed eye's behind my head, in front, and all sides...both for the incredible spectacle and to stay...

Re: Volvo in Newport

We volunteered with our (dare I say here) power boat to help with the race for the last 4 days (we've got one with a keel if that helps). I think I saw you Delta-T, good videos.

Unbelievable...

Re: Advice needed....or are these excuses??

IMHO long term cruising is not for everyone who loves to sail. There are many other forms of enjoyment including day sailing, weekends, 2 week vacations, or even summer sabbaticals on the water. ...

Re: My Autopilot is posessed by Satan!

Yea, I was thinking this too. Here's an idea, get your iPhone and run the compass application and sit down (maybe in the sauna, I don't know) right next to your heading sensor. Go sailing. Wait...

Re: My Autopilot is posessed by Satan!

Don't throw away that old Simrad unit....I had one last boat and it was rock solid. I'd hire an electronics guy first.

Is the remote unit outside....that connector might be suspect. Try it...

Re: My Autopilot is posessed by Satan!

Med,

This may not be relevant, but who knows. I had a boat with a electric hood furler and an autopilot that would go nuts whenever you ran the furler. An investigation of wiring showed the...

Re: Captains License Downside

You can be sued for any reason by anyone at any time.

If you live your life focused on this, you'll never do anything.

If you want a license, get one. I found the process to be very...

Re: Should I fix it, or scrap it?

We all (me too) tend to calculate boat costs in ways to justify our passion. So you buy a boat for X, you put Y into it, you hope to sell for X+Y and maybe a wee bit more.

But the boat sits...

Re: Maybe smaller is not so bad?

There's nothing like a small sailboat, tiller in one hand, main sheet in the other, directly experiencing the wind and the waves. Nothing.

A big cruising boat can be like driving a truck. Yea,...

Re: Asym sizing

Capta we've had asym's and on current boat a code zero, and we've come to prefer the code zero. When you are behind one of those islands blocking the trades on a light day, and reaching, I think...

Re: Suggestions for a first boat

Our first boat was a Pearson 22 with an outboard. This is an ideal size for single handing, simple maintenance, and you could overnight on it in a pinch. I'm thinking on the sound you might want...

Re: New idea for stern thruster in sailing boat

Yea, I know we like to give thruster guys a bad time; however, I confess to having one when we had a boat in the 50's, and liking it.

This idea totally gets rid of the hole in the boat issue;...

Re: vibration from prop shaft

This sounds like what happens when you pick up a line, some weed, or other foreign matter on the prop or shaft. Before we do surgery, can you see the prop and shaft...is it wrapped up.

Re: Raw water cooling - walk away?

Boat 2 (now on 5), was a Cape Dory with a small raw water cooled Volvo. It was old (over 20 years) and just kept running. Had to replace the thermostat occasionally, that was it. Yea, fresh...
