Re: Is a WW Potter 15 Good To Sail NYC Area?

I don't see why not. Hell Gate is fine if you go with the tide. (Navigating the East River - Planning Your Passage (http://www.offshoreblue.com/cruising/east-river-planning.php)) You'll want an...

Re: When can i go sailing????

... I've been sailing since January.

More seriously, somewhat reasonable people are starting to put boats in the water nowish.

Re: "FrogSuit" waterproof cases for iPads

I personally don't need a waterproof charging port. Also, it seems like the end-user could just use a USB extension cable if recharging without removing was a big deal.

Re: Rigging Tape

Oh, to answer the original question, here're some things I used tape for. Bear in mind that I race of club J/24s that I have neither the permission nor inclination to make changes to, so I use tape...

Re: Rigging Tape

I use the 3M Scotch 88 electrical tape. I heard that lesser electrical tapes will get sticky or brittle, the 88 stays flexible and the adhesive lasts. Can't confirm that other tape doesn't work.

Re: 3D printing and synthetic rigging

FWIW, the cheap 3D printers that use reels of plastic rod stock do not product structural items. You can use them to make some replacement parts, but probably nothing you'd want to use in any part of...

Re: Mount Gay Rum - Future Uncertain

I'm glad they're not shutting down entirely. While I don't care for their rum, they pour a decent amount of money into sailing...

Re: beets

Also note that beets, if kept cool and dry, pretty much last forever. Also are delicious.

Re: Camera recommendations

I have an Olympus TG1. It's probably not what you want (it's fairly high-end), but it's a fantastic underwater camera. Color balance is good down to 30 feet or so, the screen is really easy to see...

Re: Beginner section

So where does the J24 fit in? Datsun 240Z?

On a more serious note, I'd second the suggestion to take some sailing classes, and maybe join a sailing/yacht club that lets you take out shared boats.

Re: Worst funding idea EVER

I don't have any answers, but here's an example of a successfully crowdfunded sailing project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1985222961/launch-a-schooner

Honestly, I think it you get enough...

Re: "Frogsuit" waterproof floating smartphone case

FWIW, I'm likely going to buy one. I bring my phone sailing, and frequently get wet. I have one of the PVC clamp-closed cases. I don't really care about floating, but it's a huge pain to get my phone...

Re: Route from Maine to North Carolina

I don't have any cruising advice, but I've gone up and down the East River a few times. If you go through NYC via the East River, the currents can be quite strong. You'll want to time your trip with...

Re: Cold water survival

krisscross, glad you made it back to shore. I went out with a friend on his interclub (2 person dinghy) yesterday, and we managed to flip her. Fortunately, I was wearing a drysuit and life vest....

Re: Reflectors

Not encouraging anyone to do paperwork and put themselves on the hook, but it coasties do have a provision for privately maintained aids to navigation. So, if you're feeling like a good samaritan,...

Re: The things people do..

Doesn't Australia have pretty hefty fines for damaging reefs? Hopefully that will shrink the budget to something more appropriate to his level of care and navigational skill, perhaps a Hobie cat?

Re: Vacuum Sealing Gear and Supplies

I think Mr. Ziplock is afraid you'll have the bag touching the bottom of your pot, which would exceed the 212 of boiling water. They also recommend you don't boil things in the "zip-n-steam" bags,...

Re: New Years Resolutions: Sailing-Related Goals for 2014

I would use that one, except I'm pretty sure that I can use that one for any time period, past or future.

Mine was to go frostbiting. Ticked off that box yesterday. Guess I've got the "realistic"...

Re: Vacuum Sealing Gear and Supplies

Kind of an aside, but at least the Zip-Lock brand freezer bags are microwave safe (and BPA free), so won't leach out anything if you boil them.

Re: Favorite Boat Shoe???

A couple of folks I sail with swear by them. Fairly cheap, dry well (don't smell), fairly grippy. Other folks I crew with have tried them and don't like them. You need to wear socks, and being...

Re: Favorite Boat Shoe???

I wear Vibram five fingers in the summer, and O'Neill 3mm neoprene surfing booties in spring/fall. Mainly foredeck on J/24's. The deck (and associated metal bits) can be a little rough on the five...

Re: 3D Printing of Sailboats

Do you count CNC cutters? (If not, why not?) People have been using them to make plugs for years. Hulls need lots of tensile strength, which is why people make them out of fiberglass (or CF)....
