Re: Mast crutch for 14' trailer sailer

I do have a strap that goes over the mast and under the stern rail with just enough tension to keep things in place. The mast is also strapped to the bow pulpit.

Re: Mast crutch for 14' trailer sailer

Nice Vanguard, looks like she'll be a lot of fun !

I have seen crutches going either way, up from the bow or up from the stern. Going up from the bow over the tow vehicle the mast only needs to...

Re: Need Help With Fix Up

If you want to sail now, go buy a $500 boat on craigs list.

If you want something you can be proud of fixing up yourself, do lots of research, take your time, ignore the naysayers. Have fun:D

Re: Outboards: sailing with the motor down.

Yep, I tilt mine out of the water when sailing.

The lower unit is oil lubricated so it would not cause any damage from it turning as the boat moved, just cause drag. I agree it reduces boat speed...

Re: Before and After Photos - Show Us!

I used Wet Edge paint from JD. ( no affiliation )

I tried to do some roll / tip, but couldn't get the hang of it. Wrong brush, thinner, don't know.
I'm pretty comfortable with a spray gun.

Re: Before and After Photos - Show Us!

Dangit, clicked the wrong button and didn't load pics.

The original gelcoat was light green.
The light blue was rolled, but not tipped. By PO of course!
I sprayed the seafoam green single part...

Re: Before and After Photos - Show Us!

Recently did topside paint. Sprayed a single part poly. Looks so much better than the old rolled on job. Get lots of compliments on the color too. :D

Re: Aluminum or Bronze winches? small sailboat.

I picked up a pair of Barient 10 stainless winches for $200 on ebay when the old marelon ones disintegrated. I figure these will outlast the boat.

Re: Heaving-to in order to lower sails

Yes, I use a turn of line around the tiller tied off on either beam with enough tension to hold the tiller and still move it by hand. I have a type of tiller tamer as well but it eats line rather...

Re: Heaving-to in order to lower sails

I single-hand quite a bit.

I reef when hove-to with the jib up.

If I need to drop the jib I do it either when on a run and it is blanketed by the main, or if I have a downhaul rigged it will...

Re: $854,400 in Fuel Spill Liability?

While at the boat show last week I got a quote from Boat US. It included the coverage for "fuel and other spill liability...854,400"

I suppose the "and other" would include holding tank / waste...

Re: Do you play music whilst sailing?

Usually not while sailing. I hate it when my guitar gets caught in the mainsheet during a jybe.

At anchor it is nice. :)

Re: Are sailing schools worth it?

I would have to say yes.

Sure you could buy a boat for 2 grand and get a buddy to show you how to sail it. I did.

Then, I got the bug and wanted to do more, learn more, get a bigger boat, and...

Re: Trailer sailer

I own an Oday 22 and enjoy it very much. Has a small cabin with a hand sink and a coleman stove. A door on the bulkhead to the v-berth and porta-potty.
V-berth is cramped for two adults, but so was...

Re: welding and welder options

Check out the Ready Welder. I use one on my service truck. It's a 24v DC Mig spool gun. Power is from two deep cycle batteries, or three for more heat. Uses shielded wire or plain wire with a co2...

I painted one side at a time by jacking the trailer one...

Re: How does a boat sink in 15 minutes?

Back in the 90s I had a 19 foot jet boat with through transom exhaust. A short section of rubber hose connected the exhaust manifolds to the transom fittings and had rotted from the inside.

Re: Opinions on ODay's?

I really like my Oday 22.
Mine is a '75 and has a 600lb shoal keel.
It trailers nice and is easy to set up and launch.
Sails good, seems tender at first then hardens up. Easy to singlehand.

Re: Swim Platform for MacGregor 26'

Check out ebay.
I've been considering changing my ladder too.
I found a ladder / platform combo that is sized for one person to sit or stand on, made with teak or star board.
