If winds are predicted to be 45 kn. ( 51.8 mph) and the storm is moving at 15 kn, (17.2 mph) and you're traveling 10 kn (11.5 mph) are not all those velocities somewhat additive...

Though, I have sailed at night in the fog ( young and dumb). The 1st night of the '98 BOR race down the chesapeake was in dense fog.

Most of the time I've been out in fog it's been under power....
