Re: Thought there was something strange..

My first boat had a main ships compass that read North as the starboard side of the boat in all conditions. Once I removed the VHF speaker from right next to the compass, navigation was improved.

Re: Single handed docking...

Excellent points so far! Thanks everyone. In the debate about dock help I have had enough bad experiences that I generally distrust anyone on the dock unless I know them or they look REALLY salty. ...

Re: Thoughts on Petit Vivid (non-copper) bottom paint?

He bought the one in California. Surveyed like a new boat. Basically it was very, very lightly used, never raced and professionally maintained. Should be fun to see what she can do! She'll be...

Re: How to charge a SEALED lead acid battery?

I think I'm getting it now. I generally am aware of what a MPPT controller is, and I know they're the bees knees for solar, but I think I see how that would work for my application. I was imagining...

I expect with the new boat, and the young kiddos (now 2.5 years and 6months) I'll be doing a lot of singlehanding. I expect to be singlehanding when voyaging, even if the family is aboard, as my...

Re: How to charge a SEALED lead acid battery?

This is interesting, with good information about voltages and such, but how do I put this in practice on this small scale?

How to charge a SEALED lead acid battery?

I was thinking of adding a 12v battery system to my Portland Pudgy tender. Mostly it's because I want to tinker, rather than have it be really useful. What I have in mind is a 2-5Ah or less, sealed...

Thoughts on Petit Vivid (non-copper) bottom paint?

My friend has had Pettit Vivid (http://pettitpaint.com/product.asp?id=14) paint recommend to him for his new (to him) J120. Reasoning is that it's slicker/has less drag than other paints and copper...

Re: Going to look at a new to us boat.

I understand completely. I rejected a full price offer for my sinking wooden boat because the buyer wasn't the right "parent" for my baby.

Curiously I parted with my second boat, the Formosa 41,...

Re: Lashing lifelines

My first boat's (31ft 10,000lb wooden sloop) standing rigging used those nicopress fittings, with 1x19 wire BENT around a regular sized thimble. That boat had 2 sleeves on each end "for good...

I will! We should pick a rainy blustery day to go out and laugh at all those poor souls with exposed cockpits. ;) We're doing short trips this year too due to the little kiddos aboard. Once mommy...

Re: Yanmar GM30 Hard to start

I'm interested to see what is the cause here too. My Perkins 4.108 was this way. In particular, in the cold, it would take several 15-20 second bouts of cranking to start. Yet when warm, it would...

Re: What's the *second* best way to keep spiders off your boat?

Premethrin does work on spiders. The spray your linked to on page 1 is a spider spray and premethrin is the main ingredient. Just bought some yesterday to deal with the spideys in my house. ...

Nice to see you around these parts again! I'm finally a pilothouse dweller myself. Would love to get together some time once we start getting out this season.

Re: Going to look at a new to us boat.

I must be in the more advanced stages of the disease as I've always borrowed to buy boats. I make up for it by driving beater cars and having a really small house though. ;)

How are you going...

I'm disappointed! From the title of the thread I was sure you were about to suggest something really stupid. Instead your idea sounds just fine.
