Re: Rawson 30- A Blue Water Cruiser?

Have you removed the lead? If so how much of the cabin would have to come out to accomplish that?
The cement is in good shape in mine because there has yet to be any salt in the hull.
Money is not...

Re: Rawson 30- A Blue Water Cruiser?

I'm not sure what the point of all this is but then this whole blog seems to teeter between those who own Rawsos and those who want to warn people away from them.
The Rawson is very old but was not...

Re: Rawson 30- A Blue Water Cruiser?

It is not a necessity to be accepted as a popular boat. The Rawson 30+2 are varied in the use of ply in their hulls for stiffness but they had little of it in the early works like I have.
I have...

Re: cape dory 30

I have wrestled with the quest for an affordable, safe boat many years and the problem I have is that the same brand is not the same from year to year and then condition, upgrades all come into play....

Re: A life at sea...

I try to sell parents that the yacht clubs have sailing programs in the city but so far no one has done it. They don't understand what a great attitude builder sailing is.
You need friends to sail,...

Re: New here, new to sailing...

It all goes rather quick really. I still like the boatyard best. No place is the learning curve faster. Each sailor makes guess's at what the ocean will do and where to bolster his or her vessel. You...

Re: I hate to do it, but I have an anchor question. Fortress anchors anyone?

I have one of these and just saw one on E Bay that didn't meet reserve. I was told by an old timer that North Hills were discontinued because they did not lend themselves well to mass production. ...

Re: Rawson 30- A Blue Water Cruiser?

The Rawson is no race boat and it's tracking keel is no capable close quarter maneuverer. You don't get all things in one package. You might get a boat not so good at any task if you don't commit to...

Re: What is the best Microwave oven for boat?

No doubt there are "invaluable' purposes for anything on a boat provided you think hard enough on it. A bread box???
Years ago I bought up some old titanium and SS mugs and use them rather than...

Re: Can You Buy Safety?

He has a point. I think a sailor who worries is on top of it. I am no advocate of any substance legal or not that reduces a persons ability to "worry like hell." Alcohol is a scoffs dream drug but...

Re: Great Dane on Board

I have many more Clydesdales than just two. They sleep with me most every night! Mmmm, so soft and warm. I know there will be plenty of cynics who will say my horsie pajamas don't count but… after...

Re: Cruiser

It matters little to not... I think of live-aboards as people solving a housing problem with a boating problem. Many harbors can't offer berths because of unseaworthy, unsavory and even shiftless...

Re: Rawson 30

The bay has a lot of variation in conditions. Up near the mouth where it is deep (In the gap) she would preform at her optimum but there you need to dodge huge ships and ferries but few shoals or...

Re: Advice please - 30' Rawson Sloop

I am buying one of these, first because of the price. Second because it has a full keel. When I step aboard I want a boat that does not lean toward me. This one pasts the test. The rig is a bit light...

Re: considering a ferro cement boat

I know this design. They are a wide beamed double ender with plenty of room, good stability. They tend to pitch a bit more and chafe at the dock but are great on the hook. This one has not followed...

Re: Pressure cooker choice

I had a 4 quart very thin Stainless. I had it long enough to know how valuable an addition it was to the culinary devices in the galley or for that matter in any land lovers kitchen.
But I took it...

Re: Thoughts about liveaboard

As long as there is boats there will be questions, as long as there are sailors there will be opinions and as long as we have opinions there will be yarns.
A kid once asked me "Why is everyone...

Re: I've never sailed in my life... talk me into it.

Has anyone seen those Optimists carrying those new sailors /kids?
If one overboard, he first yells for a pick up but if he doesn't learn the civil voice his teeth may chatter for some time.
A good...

Re: Can You Buy Safety?

I would agree on that but most sailors see stink pots as a conveyance between service stations. Mount the big speaker system to take away all the peace and quiet and you have a hearing hazard...
The...

Re: Can You Buy Safety?

The key to surviving disaster is to drill so often that your reaction is down packed. That way the extenuating circumstance is only an annoyance.

Re: LEDs afloat

Autism on a Sailboat?

I married a Kiwi who lets me run away to my boat as much as needed. Once I was gone a whole year. But it all ended when my son who is autistic and (now 30) was abused in a care home. The only...

Re: I've never sailed in my life... talk me into it.

If you haven't heard the warnings by now there's no hope, you are likely stubburn enough to make a sailor.
I recall leaning down into a bielge to ask a senior boatwright if I should buy another ...
