Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

You are stating the obvious.. And clearly making excuses for the smart gauge and not accepting any excuses for the Xantrex.

This is not a one sided discussion of the Smart Gauge is best without...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

To suggest that our Xantrex needs to be continually reset clearly shows how little experience you have with it. Three weeks ago, I connected to electric for 1 day. Amp hours went to zero, batteries...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

Thats my point.. glad you finally agree.. And if you do run it at 20 Amps, the Peukert effect will show itself.

Finally you see my point.. SOc is very important.. On the other hand.. the...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

You have not convinced me that charge efficiency is the CEF constant in the Xantrex.. Clearly in the last 20 years, the effect of charge rate and charge efficiency is well documented. And every...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

You are not quite correct.. the voltage must fall below the voltage end point which is 13.2 volts or what you set it to. A low charge voltage and low current and AHs going to zero is what triggers...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

The low charge efficiency shows up as heating the battery pack!! That is the very definition of energy loss.. Where do you suppose this energy loss goes?? That is why every battery model of any...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

My 380 AH batteries must be discharged at 19 Amps for a 20 HR test.

If you discharge my 380 AH batteries at 20 amps because you mistakenly think they are 400 AH batteries, you will find the test...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

This brings up an interesting point.. if you attempt to do a 20 hr test on your used batteries (20 amps at 20 hrs) assuming it is a 400 ah capacity, you no doubt end up with a perceived capacity...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

NO absolutely not.. I can run my Xantrex for a month without serious accumulation of AHs or god forbid "DRIFT"...

And I disagree that the OP has a problem with their Link-Pro.. AS best as I can...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

Peukert only affects SOC and only indirectly affects AHs. It affects AHs because it affects SOC which affects charge efficiency. My unit has Peukert and its importance is as it should be.. it is...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

The Xantrex does not care who is sending charge currents to the battery. The battery model in the Xantex just simply adds up any current going in or out of the battery. My solar has no effect...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

I think you missed my point. The CEF was not wrong because the unit did a poor CEF calculation. The CEF calculation was wrong because it thought it was calculating for a 400 AH battery pack and yet...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

Continually resetting a Xantrex is an indication that something is quite wrong. This can be incredibly bad advice if the Unit has not made it past the first automatic CEF calculation.

If a...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

You are not quite correct.. the charge efficiency is dependent on the state of charge. Most all battery models know this. It is highly unlikely that the Xantrex battery model does not use this.

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

Of course.. you stating the obvious.. this discussion was specifically related to the Xantrex. I am not interested in a battery charger that works on SOC. I thought I made this abundantly clear.

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

I would love to hear you rendition of how the battery model in the Xantrex calculates charge efficiency. Particularly the older units.

I have been using the Xantrex on my boat for about 6...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

I presented a discussion about what causes this effect that you refer to as "Drift". I described the process of what happens in the battery model when it calculates the effect of charging when the...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

I can't believe you actually used the term "drift". Always interesting to see how someone responds to a highly technical discussion.

Perhaps we'll meet sometime and I'll discuss in more detail.....

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

Third way..

For people who do not like to discharge there batteries to near zero capacity...

Charge batteries to 100%.. Increase charge voltage on Xantrex to say 14 volts to keep the Xantrex...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

Second way...

Disconnect one of your two house batteries.. Do a similar test like above, but on only one battery. Keep the fridge cycling, but try to reduce the normal current draw to about 1/2.....

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

So now the first question.. How do we determine capacity in AH for the Xantrex?

Actually there are a number of ways to fix this problem.. I will discuss three ways. All three ways assume you have...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

First, let's look at what happens when the capacity is not accurate. Fundamentally, it is the issue the OP is posting. Basically, with no resets of the AH, there is an accumulation of negative AHs...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

You have talked about a quite specific way to measure capacity. It is the well known 20 hr rate. Problem is, my batteries do not discharge according to this 20 hr rate.

Rather, my batteries...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

I agree, the Xantrex provides useful information other than amp counting. My Xantrex gets disconnected each winter. It saves its values till spring presumably in flash or eeprom. So I have not...

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

Yes that is one way to calculate a number that indicates battery capacity. Fortunately, there is an easier way to get what I need out of the Xantrex.
