Re: New Jersey sailing

I live pretty close to there and both race on the Delaware River (as crew, on someone else's boat) and have my own boat at the shore. There are lots of decent options around.

The Delaware is...

Re: Renaming Boat

We're not particularly superstitious, but I like the tradition and we had a small private ceremony when we renamed our boat (to the same name as our old boat):

Re: Best place to mount a Turkey Fryer on a boat

Today, I smoked a 46' turkey on my lowly 28' boat thanks to good cooking.

Why can’t these picnic chefs learn to cook?

They especially seem to have a problem with a deep frying. The oil should...

Re: Pearons 28 passes Beneteau 46

Tacky.

This is how the one true sailor does it.

Re: Around the world on a 500-buck San Juan 24? He's got guts for sure..

I think he has yet to demonstrate that he can make the boat go in a direction of his choosing, reefs or not.

Re: Around the world on a 500-buck San Juan 24? He's got guts for sure..

I got frustrated trying to follow Rimas on his DeLorme page, so I made my own page that complies all of his insightful messages. Enjoy:

Re: World wide Marine Data Weather Resource

Not to belabor this, but in the interest of genuinely trying to help the OP, the download size of a website is directly measurable. There's no reason to speculate. There are lots of ways to measure...

Re: World wide Marine Data Weather Resource

I think this weather site is a is a good start, but if you really want to nail the 90s parody web vibe you need a more distracting background and maybe some background music:

Re: Production buckets and the limits

When I saw this comment out of context on my phone, I was hoping that someone finally got around to posting a pic of a steel boat with the caption "rust bucket."

Re: Production buckets and the limits

I'm so tired of this argument.

In John Vigor's 20 Small Buckets You Can Take Anywhere, there are several examples of production buckets that have done just fine in conditions that the average guy...

Re: want to learn on bigger sailboat

This is the exact opposite of my experience.

I sailed a Catalina 22 for 5 years on Barnegat Bay in every kind of weather, up to winds of 35kts. On a small boat, everything happens quickly, and...

Re: Outboard motor for Catalina 22

In Tohatsus, the 4, 5, and 6HP models are all the same block, just with different carbs to adjust the output. There's no weight savings in getting a 4 or 5 over a 6. Similarly, the 8 is the same...

Re: Electric guitars aboard in the tropics

As others have said, I doubt that the heat or humidity will effect an electric very much, and I think the brand/wood type would be irrelevant. You might go through strings faster and the electronics...

Re: Which ones have ship wheel/helm and no tiller?

But the car is steered from the pilothouse. I want one where I can sit on the trunk and steer with a stick. Please list all cars with stick steering on trunk.

Re: Catalina 22- Patching Sail, Weathered rigging & Teak, Hull stain cleaning?

I'd probably take the sail to a sailmaker to get it patched and just have the peace of mind that the tears won't get any worse. Sail it and see how you like it. If the sail is really original, it...

Re: Cat 22 in high waves???

I have zero regrets about owning the 22. I think it was a great boat to learn on. Sounds like you're weighing the right sorts of questions though, and your decision will mostly come down to your...

Re: Cat 22 in high waves???

It depends on the waves. A 3-5ft swell like you might find on in the ocean is no big deal. 3-5ft steep chop in a shallow bay is really annoying.

I mostly dealt with the latter on my C22. For me,...

Yet Another Leaky Portlight Thread

I recently became the owner of an '82 Catalina 27. I'd like to reseal my leaking portlights, but I'm not sure how. I know there are a gazillion leaky portlight threads, and I've read a lot of them,...

Re: Tohatsu 4 stroke 6HP starting procedure

I'm honestly not sure. It was a genuine Tohatsu tank and the vent was a little knurled plastic screw in the middle of the fuel gauge. I assume the tank came with the engine, which was a 2006. I...

Re: Tohatsu 4 stroke 6HP starting procedure

I had a 4-stroke Tohatsu 5 on my 22. I never had to modify anything to get it to start, but I did eventually develop a meticulous procedure.

Open air valve on tank
Pump the bulb (just until...

Re: Creepy sailing stories?

Fog is all kinds of creepy.

We had fog the whole way when we did our boat delivery, which also happened to be our first time sailing in the ocean. It, uh, really woke us up when we heard a ship's...
