opinions on the beneteau first 30

Looked at them very closely but bought a lightly used Beneteau First 10R. Similar LOA and LWL. The 10R is appreciably quicker, particularly in light air. If your okay without one-design, but need...

Smallest boat you can live with

Not much emphasis in these posts on loads. While there are exceptions, in general loads go up with boat size, which may not be problematic day-to-day but matter greatly when we all inevitably run...

Chesapeak Bay to Great Lakes

I second the recommendation on M&N. Used them to transport a 34' boat from Cleveland to Chicago. Professional. On time. Good communication.

4-5 Day Crewed Caribbean Charter

All -

I was hoping for referrals for a short-term (4-5 days) crewed Caribbean charter. Because of the limited timeframe, I'd like to start from locations that offer direct flights (e.g., St....

First 35

T34C - Three seasons ago, we traded our beautiful old Tartan 34C for a Beneteau First Series. While I confess to missing the Tartan's beautiful lines, I don't miss racing her or sailing her in the...

UK Tape Drive Sails

Without hijacking the thread, I'd be interested also in understanding this forum's views on the cost/benefit of the silver v. carbon tape drive sails from UK.

Thoughts on 34 Tartan

I should have mentioned that we had an Atomic 4. We did some upgrades to it, including adding electronic ignition and a new alternator, but never experienced any problems with it. Access to the...

Thoughts on 34 Tartan

We owned a 1977 Tartan 34C. Aside from being among the prettiest girls in the harbor, she was a pleasure to sail, particularly reaching. We did run into a centerboard problem. The 30 year old arm...

Much easier to sail to a mooring in the event of mechanical problems.

Re: Chicago to South Manitou Island

Best and worst. Great question. I love losing sight of land. Nothing but blue all around and the sky above you. Similarly, at night, while the glow of Chicago and Milwaukee are often visible far...

Chicago to South Manitou Island

I don't sail a Tartan 10 but have done the Mac, which generally results in a route through the Manitou Passage. We generally start the race mid-day Saturday and, during the past few races, have...

Re: Leaseshare in Chicago - Thoughts?

I have never done a time/lease share of a boat but have friends that have done them -- in larger and more expensive boats (and corresponding time/lease share). They enjoyed them for a couple of...
