Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

I'm sort of averse to sailing into inlets for that reason. Making the turn in with 20 knots wind if you are constricted can be stress inducing so I will just motor in.

There was a pretty nice...

Re: Sudden inability to sail upwind

In really windy gusty conditions my Catalina sails upwind pretty well with just the main, no reef.

Re: Which weather/wind apps & sites are most accurate?

I agree . Surface maps can tell you about what the trend will be - 1, 2, 3 days out - and what to look for during the day. Although we all knew things would be trending better, it didn't tell us if...

Not only an air keel, but the main can also be an air rudder

Re: Which weather/wind apps & sites are most accurate?

Same thing here. Crazy gusts yesterday that I could see coming way off then the wind would veer and die. Downwind my GPS was showing 7 mph - for a Cat 22.. Sailflow showed a spiky gusty pattern up...

Re: Which weather/wind apps & sites are most accurate?

There is going to be a lot of west wind today. I would use the higher numbers.

Re: Don't be so hard on the new guys

The line around the prop is the classic story you hear over and over again.

As for crew training - I would love to read a thread on that. Seems like a big subject. The person with the boat hook...

Re: Advice For Good Boat To Learn On

You should consider the expenses, logistics and risks that come with owning, towing and moving 25 foot boats in the adirondacks. Its big difference from a 22' .

Re: Best Outboard for 24 San Juan

I have the Merc 6. Its okay but a PITA with the carb. Have to clean the carb 2-3 times a season. The idle jets are just too small.

You want the external tank, trust me. The internal tank is ...

Re: Ways to Get Boat From Long Island to Upstate NY

It can be cheap....when the economy went to pieces we downsized from a Hunter 31 we shared with my best friend. The Hunter used to accrue storage and dockage fees like we had a money tree. The bills...

re: Ways to Get Boat From Long Island to Upstate NY

The INITIAL price might be low, but the cost is going up fast.. I see them around here in the $2500 - $5000 range with a motor and trailer, in good shape.

Re: What is your Cruising Motivation?

Interesting that in the Westsnail catalogue John posted - page titled "Saving Money" they give a yearly budget of $3600 for cruising - in 1975. The equivalent of about $16,000/ yr.

Personally...

Re: Catalina 275 sport

I really like it - an advanced design with racer featers such as rectractable bowspirit and in a near pefect size 2 ton displacemnt with an inboard diesel. Looks like a long cockpit. I totally see...

Re: Yet another first boat thread

Absolutely. They are very tough to rig and set up. Try balancing on a shaking cabin top with a 25 foot mast in one hand and a mess of rigging in the other praying that the whole mess doesn't fall...

If I could be 25 again, I would drop Thoreau overboard and focus on the one night stands as much as possible.

Re: Rediscovering one's "Self"

If one night stands, drinking with your friends and living on a sailboat at age 25 doesn't make you happy..............try 25 years in a dead end cubicle job with a nasty boss and lots of deadlines.
