Re: B&G Zeus Chartplotter Question

My previous boat came with a functional set of older Datamarine instruments. I have learned that Datamarine instruments do not communicate with other devices. Each instrument is separate:...

Standard Horizon HX851 quick review

I bought the SH radio last year. It works as advertised.

Things I like:
GPS - I use it to display the speed so I don't go too fast in my dink on my way to my boat. The speed limit in the...

Re: West Marine BIG sale on line

Where? I usually buy from Defender, who I think has the best prices and shipping. I also buy from Annapolis Performance Sailing ( who also has great prices on rigging. APS is even having a...

Re: Repeater Chartplotter Screens

Most plotter manufacturers today support wireless apps that run on phones and tablets so that your iPad (or other device) can work like a repeater.

For example, Raymarine, with their A,...

Re: engine size?....

It's really very simple: Sailboats have displacement hulls. Meaning that a sailboat can only go so fast (and not very fast at that). The length of the waterline determines the top speed. My...

Re: Question Regarding Price Ranges and the Value of a Cash Offer

If a boat is priced so low (relative to other comparable boats) that it will generate multiple, immediate offers, then a 'cash' offer is attractive because the deal can be done right away....

Re: Sleeping Accommodations --- is there a thread?

My Newport 28 had two settees in the main cabin. The port would expand to a double. There was a filler sheet under cushions that had legs on one side and pins on the other to lock it in...

Just a little note that mattituck was dredged this year to 10' at MLW. So now almost anyone can get in or out at any time.

Wow, I really don't want to think about winterizing now. But, since you asked....

Assuming the boat has in inboard engine, you would typically change the oil and filter while the boat is...

Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

As noted, having an itinerary with a sailboat can be difficult.

On one hand, if you want to go to specific places (Block Island, Montauk, etc,) and you want to stay in a marina, you will...

Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

Hi Guys,

I come to this discussion late, having been working many hours getting my new boat ready to launch (which is another story).

Anyway, If do you plan on coming north, as others...

Re: How often to change impeller?

I have owned my O'day since 2006. I have changed the impeller twice and the water pump once. I inspect the impeller in the spring as part of commissioning and as long as there are no cracks...

Re: Suggestions for coastal cruiser

Since you listed the C&C 99 I would add the C&C 110. You can find them for under $100K. Much more room than the 99.

Also consider the Tartan 3500. The Sabre 362 would be nice, but I...

Re: Don't have to be rich to sail

I don't believe that a lack of money is keeping people from sailing. As you note, if you want to sail, you should be able to do it cheaply.

I started sailing in 2003 with a 1982 Catalina 22. I...

Re: 10K$ boat --- Are Insurance and Survey REALLY mandatory?

You don't need a survey. You do need liability insurance. The insurance may not require a survey.

I have Allstate and they have not asked for a survey. Allstate insured my Newport 28...

Re: Boat Purchase Timing ??

This makes things a lot more clear. Most people live in a particular area, or want to sail in a particular area, so it makes sense to restrict your boat search.

Your problem (IMHO) is that there...

-Verify that the wiring from the battery to the...

Re: Expected life of Yanmar 3YM20

IMHO, a properly maintained diesel should last well over 5000 hours. Again IMHO, I suspect that more marine diesels die because the block / case / heads rot from salt air / water environment...

Re: 1989 Hunter 40 - A million questions.

The electronic thing on top of the tank is the fuel gauge. There should be a wire leading from the nut to your fuel gauge in the cockpit.

I also suspect the fuel return line is leaking....

Re: Zodiac vs tri-hull for dinghy

It's not the oars it's the hull. If the water is perfectly smooth it's fine. If there is any chop the tri hulls slap into it. A single hull cuts through the water but the tri hull can't and...

You use different types of rubber to minimize NVH at specific RPM ranges and things like that

Re: Genoa tracks

If you put up a smaller sail you would move the car forward. If you put up a bigger sail the car would move aft.

Downwind you may want to move the car forward to allow the sail to open...
