Re: Is it just me with pole problems? ;)

Heh, actually we took first in the last 3 races. He's a very good sailor, and I think the phrf may be on our side a little.

Neither of the poles need lubrication. They both slide well and have...

Re: Is it just me with pole problems? ;)

Both of our poles have a little bit of the rounded end exposed. Neither of them are corroded though. It just appears to be crappy manufacturing/design. This pic of mine shows how much of the...

Re: Is it just me with pole problems? ;)

Here's a pic of the outboard end for reference. You can see the rounded end of the pin, and the divot that receives it.

Re: Is it just me with pole problems? ;)

Update:
We had a race this past saturday, and I went early to check out the setup a little more closely. Turns out I was right. I put the loop near the end of the pin, and tugged. It slides past...

Re: Who went Sailing on Saturday? "Pictures"

Mmmmmmmmm..... Love Shiner! I rarely drink anything else, and certainly not the mainstream crap. Have you tried anything from Real Brewing (Blanco, TX)?

Re: Neglected boats in Yacht Clubs

Because then you're exluding only the ones who can't pay the high fees. This won't resolve anything. There are several 35'+ yachts in our marina, and I've never seen the owners to any of them. ...

Re: Is it just me with pole problems? ;)

It sounds like I need to spend some time before the next race examining it more to see exactly when and where it's disconnecting. I'm thinking the air is pulling the sail forward to the end of the...

Re: Is it just me with pole problems? ;)

I agree, and that's how I rig my own pole. But, this is how he wanted it done, so I did it. His theory is that if we had to gybe, I wouldn't need to reset the clew end of the pole. I would only...

Re: Is it just me with pole problems? ;)

Let me try to explain the attachment again.

There is a 6" round (1/4" dia. rope) loop on the clew of the GENOA. I attach the outboard end of the pole to that loop. The pole does NOT touch the...

Re: Is it just me with pole problems? ;)

I'm clipping the clew's small loop to the pole any which way I can get it on there. The mast end always gets mounted to the mast pin on the bottom (opposite of the pic). Catalina 25.

Re: Race crew?

I just got done joining a YC. Needed 3 signatures and I didn't know anyone. But, I took a chance walking onto the "private grounds", started talking to some guys, got their sigs, joined, and am now...

Is it just me with pole problems? ;)

I feel stupid for bringing up my "problem", but IMO it's more of a design flaw than my tactics.
I just started racing as the bowman and have been in 2 races. The next is this weekend, so I'd like...

Re: ASA 101 starts tomorrow!

I've been wanting to take the course also. After spending the last 20yrs in school, this sounds like a fun class to be in.

Re: Do you personally get seasick?

I don't normally get queezy, but it's happened when I was hot, tired, and dehydrated on a long day of boating, and inside the cabin. Once I got outside to see the land, I was fine.

Re: Any experience on a good racing watch?

Thanks guys for the reassurances on the sailing watches. I was really worried about the website reviews, but now that I know that they are misleading, I'm going to go with the Ronstan Sailing. ...

Re: Any experience on a good racing watch?

I have a nice Citizen eco-drive watch for daily use. This is for racing only.

As for the large kitchen timer on the mast vs. shouting out time from a watch. I'm sure the competition have eyes...

Re: Any experience on a good racing watch?

I'm not sure how the sync button works, but from what I hear, it's the best function with racers.

I'm glad I'm hearing good experiences from people with the Clearstarts. It's easing my mind...

Even though their watches have bad reviews, the reviewers say they have good customer service.

Re: Any experience on a good racing watch?

^^^I read about a few people using the talking kitchen timers. Sounds like something I'll end up trying on my boat, but I'd like a watch for when crewing.

Re: Any experience on a good racing watch?

Have you gotten it wet? Most of the poor reviews are about it not being water resistant at all.

Any experience on a good racing watch?

I've looked through all the old threads, and searched major websites for the varieties (Ronstan, Suunto, Gill..) To be honest, what I really want is either the Ronstan Sailing or Regatta, or the...
