M. Paul - several thousand Tanzer 22 were built in Canada between 1970 and 1988? They have a large cockpit and are heavy stable boats that would fit your price range (check out www.tanzer22.com)

Metolius - as previous poster said, buy a boat in New Zealand! They are much cheaper and arguably better built. If you are looking for the experience of sailing there, check out oposail.com and see...
