Re: Mounting hardware on Boom

The threaded hole that secures my mast gate is the thing that causes me the most trouble. It seems to instantly seize and then strip the next time I need to remove the screw. I've re-tapped it...

Re: Mounting hardware on Boom

I've had generally bad luck tapping aluminum. In time, the screws seem to always tear out the threads. Instead, I've been using SS rivets. I'd be curious for any thoughts on this.

Re: Before putting parts back on, caulk? or..

Faster's tape suggestion is the way to go. It just makes clean up a whole lot easier. There's also bedding that comes in a tape form for easy application.

Re: should I be offended?

I can see how someone might ask that. Both have wooden coamings, pretty lines and nice overhangs. Both are very nice boats in my estimation, especially when well kept.

Re: Catalina sale fell through found Tanzer

The Tanzer is a great boat. To me they seem like terrific bargains considering the quality of their construction. As I recall, they came in a keel/centerboard configuration and deep keel models. If...

Re: Converting a Catboat to a sloop

I'd agree with those who say a boat is probably at it's best as it was originally designed, but the addition of a sprit and a jib on a catboat to make it point a little better is intriguing. Might be...

Re: Ethanol in gasoline questions

Do you add Seafoam to the gas every time you fill up?

Re: Ethanol in gasoline questions

Let me preface this by saying that some of what I'm about to write is based on speculation.

I have an outboard that pre-dates ethanol gas. I started having problems in the last few years. Every...

Re: Teak substitutes. Why not?

I've seen handrails made from trex. They look great, but I can't picture it for coamings, though. Maybe too much surface area to expose the fact that it's not real. I really like the look of...

Re: Teak substitutes. Why not?

I don't think I'd want teak decks, but I sure would like to find something synthetic to replace my coamings, dropboards, trim and the like. Has anyone ever seen good looking synthetic teak in...

Re: Polar Vortex

I think if we're not a little nervous, something's wrong. I don't think that the ice can get too thick during the time that it will be cold. Hearing the wind is unsettling though. I'm hoping that...

Re: Cold Weather Gear Recomendations

When I used to race frostbite, I wore UnderArmour long johns, top and bottom, a couple of shirts and a Musto Windstopper jacket. I wore sock liners under waterproof socks and Ronstan neoprene racing...

Re: Wood this be a fast boat?

To me it looks like it would be fast in relative for it's length and weight, but who cares - you're going to look so good sailing it, it won't matter how fast you're going! Also, people are going to...

Re: Annapolis Sailboat Show Observations & Notes

I love boats with teak too, but where I used to see beauty I now only see work. I visited the J-95 (again) which seems to be the perfect boat for me. Wheel, inboard, huge cockpit, nice lines, light...

Re: How much wind is too much for you?

I read somewhere that a rule of thumb is approximately 1 knot of wind per foot of boat length. I've been out in my 24' boat in 24 kt winds and wouldn't have wanted to deal with much more. I've been...

Re: Need help and advice

I was trying to find PHRF ratings for your Mistral and your friend's Hobie, but I didn't have any luck. Assuming the Hobie has a lower PHRF number than your Mistral, all you have to do is stay close...

Re: Take your dock lines or leave them?

I used to make my dock lines just the right length so I could just loop them on the cleat when I returned. It was extreeeeeemely convenient. One day, we had a blow out tide and the boat was just...

Re: New Puget Sound Sailor needs jib advice

My boat came with a 155. I didn't think it performed well when partially furled, so I got a 110 for fall and winter sailing when the wind is a bit stronger. I figured with the 110, I could just leave...

Re: Previous owner wants property tax credit?

Interesting topic........

I'm not familiar with this particular tax, but I have gleaned a couple of things from this exchange.

If I'm understanding correctly:

The previous owner gets a tax...

Re: 12 volt AGM batts. worth it ?

I bought AGMs a few years ago. I had been in the habit of bringing the batteries home during the winter to prevent them from freezing if they discharged. (I had repeatedly killed several batteries by...

Re: Donating my Cal 29 to Charity

It's been a while and all of this may have changed, but as I recall, the deductibility depends on what happens with the boat after you donate it. My recollection is that if the charity keeps it, you...

Re: Cradle with wheels?

I'm curious - Do you plan to move the cradle by hooking it up to a car or truck, or just by pushing it. If you're just pushing it, make sure you have a way to stop it!

Re: Need answer to something I've always Wondered About

I had always thought the length of a standard snorkel was the maximum practical length. For what it's worth, I'm also told that you should not attempt to pressurize a snorkel with a regular...
