Re: Don't sand first!

I think teak toe rails are best addressed in another way. You first sand them gently and methodically with a four-inch angle grinder with 40 grit, moving steadily from aft to forward. You will notice...

Re: Westerbeke vs Yanmar

Vetus parts are hideously expensive. Try more than $1000 US for a set of rings for a small four-cylinder.

Re: Joe Adams, Yacht Designer, Murdered in Philipines

Very sad. A great designer. We have one of his Adams 12 cc cruising designs. There are a lot of boats designed by Joe in Australia.

Re: hello from Indo

Hello Darryn. If you are looking for crew experience go to the local yacht club and put up a note. Say you are keen and willing to learn. If you get a ride pitch in and help aboard the boat. If you...

Re: Not to be repetitive, but greeting from the Windy City

Welcome. Unfortunately boating can be a bit on the expensive side. However if you go small to start you will still have a lot of fun and keep the costs down. I started small many years ago and really...

Re: SailNet. It ain't what it used to be?

Sailnet-she's ok. I don't go near politics/war/religion. Off topic is good for a bit of a hoon around in psychological space. Sail-related stuff is good. So what's to worry?

Re: SailNet. It ain't what it used to be?

Re: Video Recovered from Abandoned Boat

Man gets little boat with weird rig. Man goes out on the deep blue sea. Big wave flogs little boat. Man has to be rescued. None of this is surprising. More expected.

Re: Big Freakin' Sails

Round here (Tasmania) as I've mentioned before, big freakin' winds are fairly common. So big freakin' sails tend to be fairly dangerous. The heaviest weather I've been in involved a storm jib and...

Re: Talk about blow...

I like his descriptions too. However, i would really hate being on an old square rigged ship in the southern ocean in a blow. Freezing. Rough. Wet. Yuk.

Re: Talk about blow...

Not sustained. Gusts. We are the path of the lows which revolve around Antarctica. So we have front/low weather system. These hammer us at various times of the year. Commonly 20/30k. But we getplenty...

Talk about blow...

Down here in the roaring 40s we get some heavy weather. On the south coast of Tasmania the strongest wind this month was 76 knots. It was better last month. Only 75 knots.

Hhmmm. If you need top end foul weather gear you must be a racer, sitting in an exposed cockpit or up on the rail to weather. If you need it when cruising you probably need to rethink your shelter...
