Re: Sailing in Near Gale Conditions

We had similar conditions Sunday from Beaufort, NC up to Oriental, NC, 25 sustained and gust up to 45. And yes, NOAA agrees on those speeds. We were coming back from Beaufort in my 23 foot Spirit and...

Re: Comment on my trim!

The image size doesn't help and I'd also flip the picture left to right.

Re: Toerails replaced with "StarBoard"?

Looks like a good use of it. Teak is not used for structural purposes either in that application.

Re: Portable Batt. Charger Recommendations?

It's only been a week? I sure wouldn't worry about them being discharged unless you left something on (which you said you didn't).

And you are going to charge them individually? So less than an...

Re: Heaving to while reefed?

That makes sense. And yeah, the picture is under sail not when I was trying to heave to. If I had thought about it I would just have taken a movie to better demonstrate what was going on.

Heaving to while reefed?

So I was out this weekend in fairly string winds (for my lake), steady 17-18 knots, gust to 22-23 or so. So I started with the one reef in my main and a small jib (60-70%?) up front.

I wanted to...

Re: Whisker pole?

Oh, I make no claim as to the "wisdom" of it, and nothing about my post was intended to demonstrate the best way to do anything! Just 'good enough' for a smaller boat in lighter conditions.

But in...

Re: Whisker pole?

JonEisberg, that's great info.

for the OP, I'd certainly just go with the pole you are looking at. It has a straight spike at the end which you just run through the clew, no clipping in necessary....

Re: Replacing windows by adhesive & Butyl tape?

From this article, your beliefs may vary.

Replacing Fixed Portlights | Sail Magazine (http://www.sailmagazine.com/boatworks/replacing-fixed-portlights)

And this is the paint recommended.

Re: Replacing windows by adhesive & Butyl tape?

For the silicon edges, I have seen someones example of painting the back side of the plexiglass with a black paint, which naturally means you are dependent on the bond of the paint itself to the...

re: need buccaneer 210 help

I think on the dinette plan the bucaneer has the head at the back with a door which is kind of nice. And that would be the only door I would put, since putting a wall will just make things look...

re: need buccaneer 210 help

Well, obviously they are hideous boats, but they also do have a ton of room inside. THe google will give you a lot of ideas and pics.

Re: '81 Spirit 23 in Charlotte, NC

Well, unfortunately the pulley is in and I didn't get enough pictures. I ended up not putting the second nit windy way describes to meet the cable Inlet and just used the one on the top to hold...

Re: Derelict Catalina22 value? (bottom feeding content)

Offer to take it for free. But if you are thinking about a weekendable boat in a couple years why not just keep it and fix it up? It doesn't have to be expensive to restore something and a cat 22 is...

Re: Smartphone wind speed

There is an app that uses your microphone to gauge wind as well so nothing to stick on your phone. I figure for .99 it was worth it to play with.

Re: '81 Spirit 23 in Charlotte, NC

Started working on replacing the centerboard. Built a cable mod similar to what windway did. Built up a centerboard out of strips of some really nice new zealand douglas fir they had at lowes and...

Re: Matilda 23

That is unusual, and sounds like one or the other was replaced. Generally they should be equal since the loads are usually roughly the same on a mast with spreaders. FWIW, 3/16 1x19 would be a good...

Re: Matilda 23

First off, cool little boat, looks solid at 4600lb displacement. You won't generally find that information really unless another owner can measure it for you. The stays and shrouds will be sized for...

Re: questions. stern pulpit and more , new to sailing !

Stern davits are most likely what you are looking at and a common place to mount panels.

As far as genoa sheets, it's probably not the material, depending on the winch you do need to load them up...

Re: Bought a Com-Pac 16

I'll second the great little boat comment. Went out over labor day on my (boo!) powerboat and a family was launching their com-pac 16 at the next dock over, made me jealous.

Re: Favorite iPad cover?

I have used both and they are both good.

The lifeproof is pricey but is fully (ie. immersible) waterproof but mine was not incredibly durable, only was waterproof for maybe 4 months before parts...

Re: 25lb anchor on 22' boat?

I'll take the contrary view and say that yes it is too big, at least for your primary anchor. Certainly won't go anywhere, but not something I'd want hanging off the stem. or handling all the time. ...

Re: Avoid "diegoscustommarine" on eBay for custom canvas

If they did such a good job before and it still fits well now, I'd certainly give the guys that did it the first time the business. You could also be upfront with the local guy, give him a chance to...
