O'Day 30 & O'Day 40 replacement bilge pump

After 18 months of searching I've found a replacement for the Kempax K504/5 pump made by Raritan. :D
The valves on mine had lost their flexibility and I couldn't find any to match and the exposed...

Re: Fraser Built Sailboats

Kinohi is still sailing from Vancouver as a training vessel. We took a cruise and learn on her in '89 or '90. She is set up more for off-shore racing than cruising and was a very stable boat to...

Re: Adding small loads

The extra panels are the most elegant solution but a lot of work in a production boat.
Replacing in-line fuses is not a big deal with 1 fuse per fan or light wired very close to the item.
I think...

Adding small loads

What are people doing to add new, low draw things like led lamps and small fans that come with very small gauge wires? I've been adding pancake fans to move air through the dead air...

Re: Sledgehammer saga continues

Thanks for the interest. I paid the bill and splashed the boat yesterday. Powering in the breezy conditions yesterday didn't show up any problems.
My new PSS seal is working great and new sea...

Re: Sledgehammer saga continues

Lions Gate Marina seems pretty professional and there machine is impressive.
But the service company, Oceanos Marine Solutions, offered no solution. They insist that the rudder must have been like...

Re: Sledgehammer saga continues

Captain's Cove was where I saw them lift on the shaft. They always dropped it back down but often had trouble getting the slings in the right spot.

I'm not sure how to avoid paying whatever I...

Re: Sledgehammer saga continues

No, it's in Vancouver, relatively new and the service company moved here from Granville. I haven't asked many people for recommendations but usually they recommend places on the island.

Re: Sledgehammer saga continues

I've had requests for the name of the service company but I don't have enough posts to send private mail.
I'll hold off telling the list until the bill has been settled. So far they want $2880 for...

Re: Sledgehammer saga continues

Not a cable adjustment. It doesn't even hit the rudder stop on that side because it hits the hull first.

I was watching and they used the Sea-Lift to pick it up enough the let the rudder drop...

Sledgehammer saga continues

OK, so I put the new seal in and it looks good.
Then I reassembled the steering. WTF!! On port rudder the top of the rudder hits the hull. (O'Day 40 spade rudder)
On starboard...

PSS Bonding

I'm replacing my PSS prop shaft seal. The old one was bonded by running the bonding wire underneath the 4 clamps. Is this desirable/necessary?

Re: Cutless Bearing Sledge Hammer Installation

Maine Sail

Shaft and coupling should be OK. I went directly to the machine shop that does most of the local shafts and had a new shaft made and the coupling fitted and faced.

I'll install the...

Re: Cutless Bearing Sledge Hammer Installation

I hesitate to name the business as I haven't negotiated the bill (It's in North Vancouver). To be totally honest, I found a greasy piece of 2x4 with 3 or 4 impact marks. I guess when I arrived...

Cutless Bearing Sledge Hammer Installation

So I came back to the boat yard to find the technician pounding in my new cutless bearing with a sledge hammer on the bare face of the bearing. I got a little perturbed since I had already asked his...

O'Day 40 prop shaft

Anyone know the length of the prop shaft on an O'Day 40?
I need to pull the hub to replace the PSS seal and I anticipate it not coming off.
If I can order a shaft and hub assy ahead of time I'll...

Brent,

Does the insulation stop condensation on the hull below the waterline?

Motor mount replacement

My 1986 O'Day 40 needs new motor mounts.
The mechanical work is familiar but I've never lifted a motor in a sailboat.

The first thing I learned is that the prop shaft needs to be disconnected!...

R&D engine mounts

I need to replace the mounts on my Westerbeke W46. I've seen some negative comments on the Bushings Inc mounts. Does anyone have any experience with the R&D brand?
