Sounds to me like a plugged exhaust in the leg and a bad gasket on the exhaust manifold cover. Ady to diagnose and to fix properly
What did the mechanic say was the issue with the motor?

Gary they use that same fitting on production boats for almost all tank vents from poo to water to fuel. Have even seen it used on propane vents.

I would say it is the potable water tank vent. The tank is under the vee berth and that high on the bow if you were to take on sea water thru it I would think that was the least of your concern.

If just to run the bilge pump get a small battery like for a motorcycle and one of the cheap self contained solar panels that plug into a CIG lighter plug to keep it charged up.

Unfortunately it will be a few years till I can leave the local pnw waters ( dads 90 ) and he needs me to crew his Spencer when he goes out

We have the 200 watt kit from windy nation with 30 amp pwm controller very happy with it. Similar to this one
But'the mono panels not the poly ones ( a slight increase in efficiency not available...
