Re: Vhf

I get surprisingly good cell phone reception in the Apostles now, almost everywhere, but I still wouldn't rely on it.

This is the VHF I have:

Re: Help a newbie out-1980 Catalina 22 for $2350

That's about what I paid for my Catalina 22 (I have since put more than that into it).

Regarding the outboard situation, I have a 74 pound thrust trolling motor on mine and it does quite well with...

Re: Looking a Catalina 22 - Found some problems

The swing keel on my Catalina 22 doesn't look much better than that. It slows the boat down a bit I'm sure.

More important are the keel pin and the keel cable. The keel cable is easy to inspect,...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

My friend the seamstress made me another homemade Jolly Roger, this one with a cat theme.

Lame? Probably.

Did I fly it? Heck yeah!

Praise for Taylor Made Products

I just want to give some praise to Taylor Made Products.

I bought a flag kit from them for the stern of my boat. It looks great and the flag is high quality and made in the USA....

Re: ASA 101 Prep?

That is a fantastic book. It has everything the ASA books cover plus much more. I went through it cover to cover (OK, I skimmed some of the nav stuff) when I first started sailing, then went through...

Re: ASA 101 Prep?

I agree with what the others have been saying, read the book ahead of time.

That way you'll already know the vocabulary and how things are *supposed* to work, so you can spend you class time...

Re: Inexpensive Sailing Gloves

I have those exact gloves too!

They work well, when I remember to put them on.

Re: Rowing an inflatable

Recently my parents cleaned out their garage and I ended up with a little inflatable like this that had been my toy in childhood. I'm guessing it was last inflated in the mid-80s. Surprisingly it was...

Re: EPA now mandating 15% Ethanol blends .... marine fuels?????

Your headline says "EPA now mandating" whereas the truth is that the EPA is now requesting comments on a proposal that would cause some pumps in some places to offer E15.

To repeat, I'm against...

Re: Sailing a small boat ( San Juan 23) from Florida to Bahamas questions

Here's a thread on the Catalina Direct forums about a couple that crossed and spent six weeks in a Catalina 22:

Re: EPA now mandating 15% Ethanol blends .... marine fuels?????

I agree that that ethanol in fuel is a bad idea economically and environmentally. It's really just a giveaway to ADM and other big ag businesses.

However I think this post might be overstating...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

Huh?

Flying the American flag off the stern is appropriate.

As for the decorative pennants, I don't think your link or Chapman has much to say.

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

Wow, this already senseless thread took a turn for the loony!

So for Independence Day I'm going to be flying Old Glory off the stern, obvs. I have some red white & blue bunting that I was...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

I just installed the flag halyard at the beginning of June, so I don't have a lot of flags YET. So far just the Jolly Roger, pride, and some red white & blue banners.

But my wife and one of her...

Re: Production Boats and the Limits

I love the vertical look. To me the long overhangs of old boats look pretty, but kind of quaint like you'd find in a Kincade painting.

The modern vertical bows look aggressive and fast. I like...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

Oh, that was me.

Since there doesn't appear to be any clear purpose to this thread I'm using it to post pictures of any and all decoration I run up the flag halyard. Two weekends ago it was a...

Re: Argh! - Charter Hull Scratches

I had a situation where a charter company accused of damaging the jib by letting it flog and they wanted to ding me for the repair.

Two things made it fishy to me. 1) I was the last charter of the...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

In the context of the recent SCOTUS decision and this being pride weekend, we ran a little pride up the flag halyard!

I'm really starting to like this novelty flag thing. Next weekend is obviously...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

This would be a fun novelty flag, but someone'd have to get pretty close to be able to see what it is:

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

Hmm.

I'm going to be leading an "armada" of six charter boats that weekend. I better not let the other skippers know about Talk Like a Pirate Day, they'd get us in trouble doing that on the VHF.

Re: Swim Platform with Stern Hung Rudder?

If you find that one with the built-in ladder could you post a picture/link? I need a new swim ladder for my 22' and it'd be fun to have a little platform too (if it would fit on such a small boat).

Re: Boat Shoes

I'm partial to Converse All Star low tops. They're comfy and grippy, they don't track, and don't make you look like a dork. :)

Re: The deal with AGM batteries

I can completely believe this. There are things people lie/exaggerate about without knowing they're doing so.

Commute time is a big one I hear all the time. After someone has been on the highway...
