Re: "Sailor" rescued 5 miles into 3,000 mile trip

Mentally ill, I am afraid.
Mental illness to that degree is horrible.
I have seen it once, and the poor soul just cannot think straight nor correlate danger and they don't want help, they say....

Re: Should a Roller Furler be Hard?

The sudden difficulty in rolling up is not likely to be friction. I suspect that there is something wrapping or binding somewhere.

Re: No neutral gear

A spinning prop everywhere you sail?
You will wear out your stern bearing and your gearbox.
And be very careful to check that your gearbox does not need the motor running for lubrication (rare...

Re: water pump woes

And when the motor is running, switch off the pump. I learned that the hard way. In a long motor across the Gulf of Mexico in 1992, a water line ruptured and the water pump pumped all of the ship's...

Re: water pump woes

This happens to my pump all the time and has done for about 20 years. Just switch off the pump at night and live with it.

Re: Why Are Aluminum Mast Painted?

If it is not anodised beneath the paint - and I doubt if it would be - then I really would keep painting it. Bare aluminium will corrode something shocking.

Re: Salts in the oil

For the future though, do not buy sailboats with marine diesels with turbo chargers on them.
There is no weight penalty really with not having a turbo.
They are expensive, extremely high-revving,...

Re: Salts in the oil

Did the oil change colour and become a but mustard coloured?
Run the motor for a while, stop the motor, suck some of the oil out into a glass and let it sit for an hour or two.
Is it separating in...

Re: Volvo Engines

If you avoid the 2002, 2003 series Volvo engines, I don't think you will have a problem with quality of the motors. The real problem, and it is a big problem, is the truly savage cost of spare parts....

Re: Yanmar while sailing, reverse or neutral?

My two-blade prop would be very noisy if it were spinning.
I would not be able to tolerate it for long.

Re: Yanmar while sailing, reverse or neutral?

There is no way I could listen to the prop spinning every time I go sailing.

It would drive you nuts.

With my old Volvo MD17C, I just put the transmission in reverse and leave it that way.

Re: When Lightning Strikes

You are normally pretty safe as the rig tends to protect you.
The boat normally gets all of its electrics fried though.

Re: Katie L crosses to Scotland

Come to the east end of the Crinan Canal at Ardrishaig and I will shake your hand.

Welcome to Scotland.

It is very pretty indeed, just about all of it.

Re: Volvo MD 2B

My friend, be very careful.

If it "just" needed the head gasket, then why has he not done it? How can he be sure it's a head gasket and not the cylinder base O-rings?

I have the Volvo MD17C,...

Re: In reverse while sailing?

Well, Yanmar must have a rather strange set-up, but if they say that the gearbox must be left in neutral then indeed you must do so. I can't imagine why, but they know best.

BUT, the idea that a...

Re: Repower from volvo engine?

If you do decide to re-power, look closely at the Beta series of motors. They are Kubota-based, so you can't get ripped off for spare parts as they are in fork-lifts, and cement mixers everywhere....

Re: Repower from volvo engine?

Man, on no account spend $5k on the list you describe.
Fix it yourself.
Re-condition those injectors.
Buy some new engine mounts.
And if the heat exchanger is not giving trouble, leave it until...

Re: What to look or on a Beta 20?

Top flight Japanese motor.
It's a Kubota, and spare parts are everywhere, in cement mixers, and forklifts, etc.
Revs a bit higher than the older stuff though, but you can't have everything.

Re: Gluing Pedestal Guard Feet???

Glue it and bolt it.
Don't glue it alone.
Someone will lose their balance and fall on to it in the dead of night and it will get torn off.

It is notoroiusly difficult to judge a battery condition by measuring the battery voltage, unless the battery is completely dead at (like) 12V or something similar.

Over the years,...

Re: Yanmar 2GM20F

I would be very surprised indeed if it was a problem.
It would be a monumental design failing if it were.
Lay some wood down first, anyway.
