I started sailing at the age of 28 and am 47 years old now...
But i did grew up on a farm... ;)

And everything is fine with my balance sense doing a lot of skiing, cycling, hiking and alpine...

Reading through all this i have to say, i must be blessed... ;)
The only time i feel dizzy and uncomfortable is on land after some time on the boat... especially in confined spaces like a toilet......

My guess is propane...
This stuff is the most dangerous you have on a boat...
It is heavier than air and accumulates in the bilges without you noticing it... A spark from any electrical instrument...

I only felt slightly sick once, when i was at the chart table in a bad sea...
The problem was that there was a stench of diesel from the motor... As soon as i was back up on deck, i felt like a fish...

We had something similar once but it was not only one...
For the best part of an hour we watched those things draw fiery lines across the sky and explode somewhere so high up that you could not hear...

It is safe to go swimming there, just do not drink too much of it... ;)
In case of floodings upriver it could get unhealthy with too much bacterias in it...

I usually anchor in the late evening hours when the sun is already setting and leave the anchorage quite early in the mornings...

I actually use both, if present on the charter boat...
And i only use them during the day, anchoring and steaming light should suffice during the night and the black shapes are not seen during night...
