Re: Wheel Helm vs. Tiller

It really depends on the kind of boat you have, how you sail it, and how much feel you want with the boat. Obviously you're going to get more feel with a tiller, but if you have a huge heavy boat...

Re: Mutiny at Dawn - Transpac Race 2013

I still can't past the fact that these guys agreed to sail with the skipper without knowing him, and even more so that the skipper agreed to sail with THEM. I mean, that's a HUGE race, and with only...

Re: upraded my 22' for a 30' and now afraid to leave the slip

Some great practice would be to get out of the marina first, then go out in the middle of the lake and really put it through the ringer with all sorts of maneuvers. You should try stopping from...

Re: What a Weekend!

Sweet weekend! It's a great feeling when you get the boat up and hauling, no matter how long you've been sailing! I've been sailing my entire life, but I still get a little thrill once the wind...

My Summer of Sailing

I've had an amazing summer this year, and I just wanted to share part of it. I think the sailing community is pretty awesome and this is just an example of how great it really is.

My summer of...

Re: Lake Erie Islands?

Thanks for the input! We'll have to see exactly how this'll play out. My buddy's parents are coming along, and they're kind of old, so we might have to drop them at a hotel for a few nights...

Re: Slow Racing or Fast Cruising?

Agreed. Especially on the idiot part for the yelling. Most of the time the yelling crew isn't the winning crew. Granted, there is a huuuge difference between yelling "at" someone and yelling "to"...

Re: Slow Racing or Fast Cruising?

I always try to make the boat go as fast as possible, whether I'm cruising or racing. If I'm cruising with a group of friends I'm always the guy tweaking the vang, cunningham, jib leads etc to get a...

Lake Erie Islands?

Hello All,

I'm planning a trip with my buddy for Labor Day Weekend this year, we're hoping to take his Beneteau First 38 from Detroit down to the western Lake Erie Islands for the weekend with...

Re: Port Huron to Mackinac Race

Saw you guys headed back, sorry to hear that! We had a great race, shredded our No. 1 that first night, then close hauled with No. 3 and full main all night. Everyone was on the rail that night,...

Re: Mutiny at Dawn - Transpac Race 2013

Ok so after reading the vast majority of the 76 pages of posts here's my two cents.

Obviously you can't lay all the blame on one person. 99% of the time in life that's just not how things work. ...

Re: Slow Racing or Fast Cruising?

It's all about what you want, and making sure your goals are aligned with the entire crew. I have no problem racing on a hard core race boat where weight is a huge concern and you're constantly...

Re: Dear Mr. Weatherman...

Yep, same here... Sea trialing a Beneteau first 38 tomorrow with a buddy who wants a liveaboard, should be fun. Forecast is sunny, high in the low 80s, 10 knots of breeze. Fun times... :)

Re: charts

I try to use paper and electronic concurrently... I'll lose paper once electronic charts can scroll as quickly as moving my eyes across the chart.

Re: Dinghy Cruising/Camping?

There is like a tiny chance of fixing it, but it would take A LOT of work, and I don't have the time/money to do that right now. We spent pretty much all of last winter getting it out of derelict...

Re: lon/lat deg min vs. decimal

I don't know how all commercial ships use it, but in the CG we do Degrees and then Minutes in Decimals. For example: 78° 45.56 W On the radio it woudl be "## DEGREES, ## DECIMAL ## N/S/E/W"

Also...

Re: Greetings

Thanks, I'm trying...

I guess more info on my sailing background wouldn't be a bad thing... My dad had a Thistle, so that's what I learned to sail on. Grew up sailing on some J/22s, J/24s and...

Re: lon/lat deg min vs. decimal

It depends exactly what your readout is, if it's Degrees and then Minutes with decimals (as opposed to minutes and seconds), you just multiply the decimal part of the Minutes display by 60 and plug...

Re: Dinghy Cruising/Camping?

My fiancee and I were planning on taking our Thistle on the Everglades Challenge next year, and doing a bunch of camp-cruising in it this summer. It's a 17' racing dinghy, about 6' wide and a draft...
