Re: Modern day blue water sailboat?

The previous model (HR31 built from 1992-2009 (http://www.hallberg-rassy.com/hr31/hr31.shtml)) had a closed transom and a more overhang at the bow.

Re: BlackCat Systems HF Weather Fax for iPad/iPhone

The schedule button just displays the NOAA schedule from http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/marine/rfax.pdf
There's a little button to update it in the app if NOAA ever updates it but you don't need...

BlackCat Systems HF Weather Fax for iPad/iPhone

Gotta plug a great app I've been playing with. BlackCat Systems recently released an app that can be used with a HF radio to receive weather faxes...

Re: Boat features list

TQA's suggestion to list ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE CONTRA INDICATIONS is ideal but don't be scared to look at boats that aren't what you thought you wanted. I "needed" at least 100 gals of water, no...

Re: What's wrong with this pic?

In The Thomas Crown Affair (remake) sailing screen, Pierce Brosnan is yelling at the rest of the crew to be snappy while he grinds this winch

Re: What is the smallest dinghy with a cabin?

The previous owner of my boat and his wife had a Wayfarer first. They regularly camped out on it with a tarp for a roof.

One morning she woke up to find a large snake on the other side of the tarp...

Re: Sailing the Boat

Has anyone tried a garden sprayer to rinse out a (thick double) dog's coat? I'm wondering if a solar shower might work better for that even though it would use a bit more water.

Re: First Timer with bottom paint (VC17)

VC17 isn't hard to work with. It's very thin but goes on smoothly. I bought a little foam roller that came with a small paint tray. I kept a little in the paint tray and rested the lid on the can to...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

The few younger sailors that I know (myself included) have pretty flexible work arrangements. I don't know that I could do a normal 9-5 job with a typical commute then pack everything up to go...

Re: Galley Oven

As you said, it depends on your own personal use. The former owners of my boat spent about 5 months living aboard each year and used the oven to store bread. And they didn't have a BBQ. They did use...

Re: the Silliest question you've ever been asked?

This isn't so much silly as giving me hope for the next generation. I had an 8 year old girl out sailing this summer. Worried she and her little sister would be scared when the boat heeled over, I...

Re: Dogs?

Does anyone have a vacuum cleaner that deals with dog hair well and isn't huge? We have a Miele canister vac that came with the boat but it just takes up too much space. Heard good things about the...

Re: Weather Fax

Bluetooth LE is a different protocol than "classic" bluetooth. They operate on different channels in the same band but can't talk directly to each other. I've never seen a device to translate between...

Re: Weather Fax

For an iPad or iPhone to talk to a piece of external hardware over that cable it has to have a special "Made for iPhone" chip in it. Getting a device license for MFi costs at least $80k and a...

Re: Survey about Propane Burner/Oven Range

Mark, would you believe the "glass opening door thing" was a feature that had never been used (other than for bread storage) for my boat's the first 15 seasons? And the couple who owned it cruised...

We sail with 30 lbs of herding dog who's usually pretty happy sailing. Mostly he's happy to be with us and enjoys his shore excursions. We've found him in the dinghy a few times when he wasn't told...

Re: Sandal-type Boat Shoes

I wear casual Tevas as deck shoes since the Sperry's and Sebagos are too narrow for my feet. I picked these up a few years ago and I've been really happy with them: Teva Westwater...

Re: Review of my season on Georgian Bay

I certainly don't mind people lusting over her. I really didn't think that was what we'd end up with when we started looking. The previous owners did a great job of taking care of her.

Re: Does it cost anything to port in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland?

There are a few pleasure boats in some of the working ports, at least in NS. This club will accomodate transients but I don't think the site shows that: Isle Madame Boat Club...
