Re: In mast furling / winter storage

I have had in-mast furling for going on 14 years now. I leave my main sail in the mast; I take the genoa down. I figure the mast is providing almost as much protection as my garage would.

Re: Pacific Seacraft 63' ketch nears completion

Ah ... That makes sense. As the aft berths were labeled single berths in the original drawings, I just assumed the owners would be forward. And since you indicated the owner's son was a professional...

Re: Pacific Seacraft 63' ketch nears completion

I have a question about the cabins after looking at the drawings on your website? Are the owners planning to be in the forward cabin with the v-berth? Sleeping feet forward? At the age of 60, one of...

Re: Pacific Seacraft 63' ketch nears completion

Very sweet. My wife, who is an avid cook and amazes our dock mates with her culinary treats, would love the galley!

Re: My new web site is up and running

In the Robert H. Perry Bio section, you repeat the following text. It is both above the picture of Lakemba and to the side of the picture (at least in my browser):

In 1957 my Dad made a trip back...

Re: iPad users only

I use the Navionics package and like it a lot. I've had it for about three years or so. On the old boat, we didn't have a chartplotter in the cockpit. With our new boat, we have a Raymarine e127 in...

Re: SW Ontario - Winter cover

By the way, the first boat wintered just south of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in Racine.

Re: SW Ontario - Winter cover

I have had wonderful results from The Canvas Store. They have made two covers for me. The first was still going strong when I sold that boat with over 11 winters on it. The second is for the new...

Re: Getting Used To New Boat

I completely understand ... we are going through the same thing ... for me, the biggest change was going from a 36 Center Cockpit to a 44 aft cockpit. The first few times docking were a bit of an...

Re: How many women here own their own boat?

Is the counter to this question, how many single men own their own boat and how many couples own a boat? My wife and I have owned a couple large sailboats over a period of 12 years. So I wouldn't say...

Re: Chart plotter or IPad

I have a Raymarine Hybrid Touch 12" Chartplotter at the helm and I have an iPad with RayView and RayControl for down below. From below, I can do anything on my iPad that I can do on the chartplotter....

Re: Sunbrella Winter Cover

FWIW, I had my cover from Canvas Store for 11 years and had zero issues with it. Still working just great. Sold that boat and included the cover with it. New owners should be many more years out of...

Re: Sunbrella Winter Cover

I've had great success with The Canvas Store. They use a material called Top Gun.

Re: Bow Thruster by eXturn.

Amen to your last statement. I was prepared to give our new boat one summer without a bow thruster (it is nine feet longer than our old boat ... no two-footitis for us!) to see what it was like. But...

Re: 2014 Catalina 445 vs 1998 Oyster 45

No issue with your numbers or that you take a hit. But I would say that the 10% commission is not depreciation in the price of the boat; it is the cost of doing business if you sell through a broker....

Re: TV Antenna

While we haven't used it yet, we have just ordered that exact model to be placed on our mast as they build it for our new Catalina 445. The boat dealer, who I trust, says they use it all the time and...

Re: 2014 Catalina 445 vs 1998 Oyster 45

Using these prices for depreciation calculations, the worst case scenario ($80,000) has just a 13% depreciation over the $92,000 GeorgeB paid for his boat. That is a far cry from the 40-60%...

Re: 2014 Catalina 445 vs 1998 Oyster 45

Regarding boat size, there are just some things from my experience that a 36 footer has a hard time doing. For example, when we considered upgrading our 36CC Beneteau vs. buying the 445, we talked...

Re: 2014 Catalina 445 vs 1998 Oyster 45

I will say that when we were looking for our 445, we did consider used 445s. However, what we were finding (at least for freshwater boats) was that even the 2010 models had not depreciated anywhere...

Re: 2014 Catalina 445 vs 1998 Oyster 45

I can't offer anything more on the Oyster vs. Catalina than what has been said here. However, I thought I'd share that we bought a Catalina 445 this past fall (and received wonderful help from Melrna...

Re: House batteries won't start engine - ideas?

On my old boat, it was voltage drop due to the size of the wire used from the key switch to the solenoid. As it aged, its ability to support the necessary voltage degraded. This apparently is a...

Re: Bounty captain Robin Walbridge's 'reckless decision' blamed for sinking

Not really material to this conversation, but this is the same captain in command of the Bounty when its masts clipped the Lake Shore Drive draw bridge in Chicago. Many tall ships had come to Chicago...
