Re: Winter sailing in Northeast

Hey,

Very nice. I'm jealous.

My boat is spending this winter in the water at a slip. I visited her yesterday. I would have liked to get out, but the engine is winterized and the sails are off....

Re: Best VHF with a wireless handset option?

Hey

Boat and cheap just don't go along :)

What are you REALLY trying to do? Just writing 'extended range and DSC' doesn't mean much. What you plan on doing with the DSC information? Do you have...

Re: Would you work 1 additional year to go from $50k to $150k boat

Hey,

I would NOT want to go cruising in a NEW boat (maybe cursing at it). The cost of adding all the gear, plus the depreciation, plus having to worry about service issues would give me a heart...

Re: Journey or the Destination

Well,

I enjoy both. MOST of the time I just daysail - so it's all about the journey as there isn't really a destination (maybe we plan on anchoring and swimming, or stopping for lunch, or doing a...

Re: engine size?....

Hey,

It's really very simple: Sailboats have displacement hulls. Meaning that a sailboat can only go so fast (and not very fast at that). The length of the waterline determines the top speed. My...

Re: Light air/Downwind sail choices

Hi Guys,

I don't have lots and lots of experience with free flying sails and furlers, but I do have some.

I used to race on a c&c 34 that the owner spent lots of $ on. That boat had lots of...

Re: Light air/Downwind sail choices

Hey,

That was a good article, but it was written in 2008. Since then the major development has been in furlers for asymmetric spinnakers. I think it's easier to use a furling spinnaker than a...

Re: Plastic bolts! $&@$?

Hey,

Why couldn't you just change the oil filter? Why did you have to pump out the new oil?

Re: engine size?....

Hey,

My Newport 28, around 7000lb, came with a 16 HP engine. I had a 2 blade fixed prob. I thought the engine had plenty of power.

I would think that 16-20 HP would be fine for a boat up to...

Re: Light air/Downwind sail choices

Hey,

If it were my boat I would get an asym spinnaker on a furler.

You have enough sail for upwind work. The asym will be good for 80 degrees to 140 or maybe even 150 if the wind is up.

Re: Thoughts on S2

Hey,

I haven't really paid that much attention to the market recently but I just did a quick search on yachtworld to get some ideas. Note that in your price range there are better places to shop...

Re: Thoughts on S2

Hey,

I just don't see how a 30' boat can work for 5 people for 2 weeks.

I had a Newport 28' boat and the five of use could fit for a weekend, but no longer. The problem was when you were in...

Re: trailer sailor vhf

Hey,

I'm not a trailer sailor, but I have a bunch of hand held radios. Here are some 'off the top of my head' comments:

Uniden: I bought a pack of 2 Uniden radios. They were under $100 for the...

Re: Westerbeke preheat with torch?

Hey,

What happens if you try to start the engine 'as is'? Do you use the glow plugs at all? Does the engine eventually start? What temps are you trying to start the engine at?

My last boat had...

Re: Location suggestions

Hey,

Since it's December (and cold) I would avoid the east coast of NY from Annapolis to Maine. Brokers don't really want to work now, not a lot of incentive for owners to sell now, etc.

I...

Re: Sailing Alone Better?

Hey,

The answer is 'it depends.'

I do like to sail alone and do it frequently. It's easy to get on the water that way - no waiting for anyone, no one else to worry about, no one is in the way...

Re: Best Coastal Cruiser under 37 ft

Hey,

If you really like C&C or J boats (or any other boat) but don't want to deal with a large main and associated covers, you could always just add a furling BOOM (not mast).

Hey,

You will probably get a lot of replies on this.

Re: Winterizing - Do you run your engine after the oil change?

I run the engine. I want to make sure that fresh oil is circulated through the engine. I also want to verify that the new oil filter gets oil pumped through, and I want to verify that I have...

re: Your opinion about touch screens

Hey,

I have the Garmin 741S (previous model to the 741xs). It has a touchscreen and IMHO works just fine. I have sailed in rain, sun, night, etc. and it works fine. I don't sail in weather that is...
