Re: Oil pan for Universal Diesel

Yes, the Universal pan on my 5424 has a drain too.

I think the regulation in question concerns oil and fuel tanks, which shouldn't have a drain that could potentially contaminate the bilge....

Re: Groco Seacocks BV vs. FBV

The dissimilar metals don't lead to galvanic corrosion, because the ball is sitting in a Teflon seat, which insulates it.

IF you are in frshwater, I would think that the FBV would be fine.

Re: Groco Seacocks BV vs. FBV

I used the FBV 3 years ago, and so far so good. I also have a 6-year old BV series. The BV does feel much smoother - the FBV always feels a little gratey when moved, which I hope isn't corrosion on...

Re: Low coolant level

The most likely cause of coolant loss is a slight leak somewhere. The best way to find those leaks is with a cooling system pressure tester, like this :

Re: Towing Services

If you join Boat US you get TowBoat US and Vessel Assist towing. I suggest using the Boat US website to see where towboats are based in your area, and if any are convenient to your cruising area.

Re: What are the pros/cons of the Max Prop

I don't know what I'd do without my prop walk, it's a great aid to maneuvering if you use it to your advantage.

Re: Rigging question

Take a look at McMaster Carr's high strength stainless rivets. You can use Lanocote to prevent corrosion. The real question is how did the old ones rip out. Are the holes in the mast distorted?

Re: Lower rudder bushing

The bronze on bronze approach used on my Bristol lasted 30 years and at least 10,000 hours of use, so I'm inclined to think it has something going for it.

Re: Lower rudder bushing

This pic illustrates why it's complicated on the Bristol :

You can see the cut.

Re: Lower rudder bushing

Delrin is a machinable plastic so you need an ordinary machine shop, not a plastic fabricator. It would be made on an ordinary lathe.

You need to make a drawing or sketch of what you want, and...

Re: Lazarette lid supports - spring or gas?

It's worth bearing in mind that on many boats, including mine, the lazarettes are open to the bilge. They are a major cause of sinkings of knocked-down boats (particularly J24s).

When sailing I...

Re: sealing deck

406 Colloidal silica is the general-purpose thickener, for when you don't want the epoxy to run. I also use the 407 additive which makes the epoxy easier to sand. It's good to have both around.

Re: Bottom Paint Flaked Off Down to Gel Coat

How big are the areas? For some reason the adhesion was bad between the original paint and gelcoat (not clean enough? Some mould-release agent left on the surface?) Anyway, you are right the most...

Re: Help with a leak?

Essentially there isn't a good substitute for waiting for a really rainy day, and seeing where the leak is (leaks are, more likely). Water can travel a long way from the original leak.

Culprits...

If you are looking to upgrade the 4 gauge wiring, I recommend genuinedealz.com for custom battery cables. The quality and price are both excellent, and I used the savings to upgrade the cable gauge a...

Re: Awlgrip cleaner/wax

A week or two? I treated the topsides with Awlcare about 8 months ago - water is still beading on it. Also you can still see where I missed a spot near to the stern - it is much shinier where the...

Re: Awlgrip cleaner/wax

Don't use wax, it does indeed make a right mess. Awl wash and Awlcare are the way to go. Awlcare is a protective sealant and seems to last quite well. Although the instructions tell you not to, I...

Re: Handheld GPS recommendations

I have the 78SC and like it just fine. It gets used as a backup, although it was the primary device for a while.

Also take a look at the Garmin Oregon 650.

Re: Is a WW Potter 15 Good To Sail NYC Area?

i'd say the WW15 is a great beginner's boat, but you need to stay away from demanding conditions until you have some experience. Conversely, a 45-footer might be ideal for Hell's Gate but it's a poor...

Re: What to do with 450' of 1" line that -- ready for this? -- floats!

Cut in into two 200ft lengths, and keep it in case you ever need to more at the mooring balls here at Ayala Cove (or anywhere else with mooring balls 200ft apart!)

Re: are these blisters

On my boat your blistering would correspond to a bronze casting/machining, that forms and supports the gudgeon. It is through-bolted into the fibreglass.

Suggest getting to work with a sander and...

Re: Copper sheeting & CopperCoat anti-fouling

Trouble is, my boat always needs...

If there is misinformation, the way to counter it is with sound information.

I have an open mind, but open to sound data, from scientifically sound testing, as...
