Re: Solomon Islands a must

Know where you are coming from. Had similar experiences in PNG in the 70s and 80's. Amazing hiking, diving and sailing. Incredible scenery. World War II stuff everywhere. Hardly anybody else there....

Re: Best Route: Great Lakes to East Coast?

The Erie Canal, especially from Buffalo to the Mohawk River, is ideal for a family. Lots of free dock tie ups, quaint towns, good supplies etc.

Heading out the St Lawrence seaway and down the...

Re: Great Egg Harbor Shoaling

Personally, did not think it was worth the risk when the coast could be tackled in a 24 hour run.

Locals give me inaccurate or incomplete information all the time. Just too easy to make a fatal...

Re: Great Egg Harbor Shoaling

Too right! I met a family who owns a marina just inside the inlet a few days ago and asked them about the inlet. It's no problem, they told me. Just follow the bouys. Oh, and they move the buoys...

Re: Self steering dilemma

That is a really important point. Our ST 4000 tiller pilot seems to only sip power but our medium-heavy cruiser type boat tracks well and sail balance is easy to achieve. Might be different in a...

Re: Considering PSC for family of 4

I stand corrected. Sorry.

But I still believe there is something magical about PSC 34s.

I was up on deck in my underpants last night. There was a strong tidal current pushing the boat one way...

[QUOTE=Cruisingdad;1074343]
As the tech editor for C400, with hundreds of our boats made, we have not had one (not one single, never, ever) C400 turtle.[QUOTE]

That's the rubber hits the road you...

Re: IPAD or...... ???

Oh my goodness. Someone has been drinking Apple's Koolaid again!

The facts are absolutely clear. Android (Google) holds more than 50% of the mobile OS market, iOS (Apple) holds less than 30%.

Re: IPAD or...... ???

Consider an Android device. We used two Samsung 7" tablets with MX Mariner as our primary chart plotters across 1250nm in US waters so far this year. Perfect for US waters and I love the portability...

Re: Considering PSC for family of 4

As a PSC 34 live aboard and cruiser, I'm the first to admit the PSC 34 is slower on the pickup than lightweight production boats in light winds.

But step off a Catalina or Beneteau onto a PSC and...

Re: anchoring story ... your opinion sought

I use Anchor Watch Pro (Android). Works great and will use very little power if set up correctly. The key to low power consumption is to be able to adjust how often the anchor watch checks the GPS. ...

Re: Yanmar still overheating

Our 3HM putts along fine about 2000rpm. It will get hot if we run above 2500 rpm for long periods.

This might be a silly question... but have you checked your raw water filter and associated...

Re: Is there a speed limit on the Great lakes

We found Lake Erie power boaters especially inconsiderate. Here in lower New York State we have found power boaters more considerate than any other area we have been in.

Re: Considering PSC for family of 4

We are cruising on a 1989 PSC 34. The boat is very well put together. Currently in NYC on the way south. If you PM your phone number and email address I will contact you when we are in the Chesapeake.

Re: Dinghy v. Keelboat as first boat

I say get the 22. I've sailed both, the 22 is more forgiving to the single hander and it doubles as a camper. You will probably get more miles in on the 22 - the 14.2 will get boring quick.

Re: Info needed, routes Great Lakes and ICW

Why not take the Erie Canal all the way to Lake Erie? The western part of the canal is more interesting and there a ton of free services. Doesn't seem to make sense to exit via Oswego unless you are...

I am also a heavy user of Google Maps (on Android)... but like AC and Bob it is only a rough guide. Common sense and local knowledge still prevail.

We stopped at Albion, NY today, which looked...
