Re: delivery question

Google it, plenty of captains, this just an example:
Powerboat Sailboat Yacht Delivery Captain Training Consulting (http://www.globaldeliveryservice.com)

Some will bid by job, some by the day. ...

Re: I can't kick the old school

More power to you.

My vision of "old school" is much more cheapo and less retro. Let's say, beater Triton but with decent rigging and sails I can coast-crawl in, hand-pump sink, alky stove, ice...

Re: Deep in my chain locker something nasty lurked

I'm glad you noticed it before it noticed you, and from your title, glad it wasn't something "worse"

Like an incident on a seagoing cargo ship a colleague related to me, while anchored a stowaway...

Re: Pearons 28 passes Beneteau 46

I have kinda enjoyed this thread. We are a "big tent" here, certainly big enough for both James and Smack, who are both okay with me (for what that's worth, ha ha).

I teach most of the time I am...

Re: Pearons 28 passes Beneteau 46

I kinda did what James kinda did, on this very board I "asked" why the southbound very nice sloops in the wide and high sail-under bridges part of the mid-Florida ICW didn't sail or at least...

Re: Suppose you ran around on a falling tide

Definitely not a stupid question, but the answer is "big" because lots of variables. What are you grounded on? Mud? Sand? Rock? You're an hour from low tide, I think you're asking, and attempts...

Re: Pearons 28 passes Beneteau 46

If it has a mast in it, I'm happier to see that it's a sailboat rather than a powerboat. And yes, I admit I tend to "sail the other guy's boat", not an attractive trait:

"See those scallops on the...

Re: Pearons 28 passes Beneteau 46

Good for you.

You sailed better and didn't over trim. And you had a "real" mainsail and not one of those awful hollow- leeched battenless mains that results when you have the "convenience" of in-...

Re: 50 Best Cities for Boating

Well I'm not generally a "list" guy but this is a "yachting" list, not necessarily a sailing list?

Because a few of these are better as powerboat ports and are kind of commercial (New Bedford). ...

Re: Advice on parking a Bristol 40

I agree with the good advice above.

I'm trying to picture this visually, when you enter the slip in your stbd turn, she just doesn't turn smartly enough?

Assuming the back and fill ably...

Re: Spinaker or Genaker - which do you prefer?

I'm with you as long as I have a crew (or maybe even solo on a quiet and perfect day), I prefer old-school sym. Easier navigation on a deep broad reach or run, since you can sail the rhumb line...

Re: Judging Boat Speed during figure 8 MOB

I teach it, on a smaller less-interia boat, but have found it useful to have them go to a broad reach right away, so that after tacking you return on more of a beam reach, then head up to close...

Re: Around the world on a 500-buck San Juan 24? He's got guts for sure..

Well, I recall I'm the thread-starter here, and it has been one of the longest threads back over on SA, and 23 pages here is pretty long too.

But his voyages have been long, too, in large part...

Re: Does sailing actually lengthen your life span?

Back when I used to borrow a Shields occasionally for a one-design race (M'head, long ago), there was this old guy with nonfunctioning legs and some sort of skin condition so had to wear this big...

Re: Outboard Engine Start-up Problems (fictional)

What about just plain flooded? That's usually my problem when someone pulls too many times, typically with choke on. the only cure seems to be five or ten minutes. This can be an eternity when the...

Re: Wing *on* wing or wing *and* wing?

New controversy?:

Is that jib winged out or wung out?

I've always been a "wung" guy, though I suspect it is grammatically uncouth.

Re: Fitting place for this post....

A good way to figure out if you are sailing close enough to the wind (while beating) but not "too" close (which robs you of speed) nor too far away (which needlessly gives away distance, is jib...

Re: Sailing Backwards?

you improv'd a "backstaysail" and I suppose you could use it to sail backward. But I've heard it puts an undue strain on the rudder (and the helm). I can see doing in short-term if you overshot a...

Re: Need help to I.D. a small sailboat.

Yeah, Cal 20 is a plastic classic, still good and still being raced and pocket-cruised as we speak.

Well-designed and indestructible it seems, kinda like *this* ;-)

200 year old Volkswagen...

Re: St. Thomas & St John worth visiting by boat when in the BVI?

And Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas is the "big city", which I kind of enjoy in cruising, though not every night.

Cruz Bay on St John was fine as i recall.

Re: Free boat. What is it?

Never seen one before, but from the shape and rig size, this might be a fun boat to sail. And you can row it, or put a very small outboard on it. And it only weighs a hundred pounds, so not...

Re: Comment on my trim!

White sail has nice clean telltale flow off the leach. Maybe could be trimmed in a little more, or moved up more on the traveler in order to point higher, but I can't say without 'being there'.
